How to Program Key Fobs, yourself, at home for your Camaro. Skip the Stealerships.

Wanted to post this process in here to help others save money like I did. I recently bought a 2017 Camaro SS 6 Speed manual Hyper Blue Metallic and I love the car. It is my 4th Camaro, but it only came with 1 key fob. I had seen some people say you have to have 2 key fobs to program but if you only have one you can still do it, takes about 35-40 minutes to finish from start to stop and is super easy, just takes some time.

Let me repeat, YOU DO NOT NEED 2 KEY FOBS to program any keys. I just did this myself last night with only 1 key fob. If anyone has questions, please feel free to respond to post or message me directly.

2016–2024 Camaro (All Trim Levels) — DIY Key Fob Programming Steps

Before you begin: Remove the emergency keys from all fobs and place somewhere not in the way. Keep the original emergency key aside (you’ll use it to enter programming mode).

Also make sure, if you bought new key fobs, install batteries into those fob s or verify the batteries are good before doing this process.

Remove the cover over the emergency key slot on the driver’s door.

STEP 1 — Enter Programming Mode

Insert the original emergency key into the driver door key slot. Turn the key to the left (counter clockwise) (bottom of the key goes right toward the rear of the car) five times.

The dash will display “Remote Learn Pending, Please Wait.” It will display this for a few seconds then the screen will go black. (Don't worry that the screen is black, it's in the programming mode.)

Wait 9.5–10 minutes.

STEP 2 — The screen will return to say " “Remote Learning Pending, Please Wait.” Press the Start/Stop button once (do not hold it, just a quick push). This is when the System Erases All Old Keys.

Wait another 9.5–10 minutes.

STEP 3 — The screen will return to say " “Remote Learning Pending, Please Wait.”, press the Start/Stop button once. (This is the final Pre-Programming Phase)

Wait another 9.5–10 minutes.

STEP 4 — After the third waiting period, the screen will say Press engine start/stop button to learn, and then “Ready for Remote 1.” Don't take too long putting remotes into the back cup holder of the center console.
The Camaro can learn up to 8 remotes.

How to Program Each Fob (Step-by-Step)

Do these steps for each fob you want to program:

Make sure the dash says:

For the first one: “Ready for Remote 1”

Take the fob you want to program (new or original).

Place the fob face-down in the rear cupholder in the center console.

Make sure the fob is fully seated and not tilted.

Press the Engine Start/Stop button one time. Do not hold it. Just a quick, single press.

Watch the dash: After a couple of seconds, the message should change from
“Ready for Remote 1” to “Ready for Remote 2.”

Remove the fob from the cupholder. Press the Unlock or Lock button on that fob one time.

This step to finalize programming with computer and Required or key wont work. (You wont hear doors lock or unlock at this time.)

Set that fob aside (it’s now programmed).

Now it will say: “Ready for Remote 2”

Take the next fob you want to program.

Place the fob face-down in the rear cupholder in the center console.

Make sure the fob is fully seated and not tilted.

Press the Engine Start/Stop button one time. Do not hold it. Just a quick, single press.

Watch the dash: After a couple of seconds, the message should change from
“Ready for Remote 2” to “Ready for Remote 3.”

Remove the fob from the cupholder. Press the Unlock or Lock button on that fob one time.

Repeat these steps for each additional fob, I had 3.

When you’re done programming fobs and the screen shows “Ready for Remote (next number)” but you have no more to add, move on to the “exit programming mode” step.

Make sure you also program your original fob too, so the car knows all three (or however many you have) because the computer erased all key fobs from its system during the first 30 minutes of this process.

When you’re done programming fobs and the screen shows “Ready for Remote (next number)” but you have no more to add, move on to the “exit programming mode”

STEP 5 — Exit Programming Mode

When finished, press and hold the Start/Stop button for 15–20 seconds.

You’ll might see the screen or backlight flicker, depending on time of day and how bright it is outside, that’s normal.

After 15 seconds or so, Release the button. You are now out of the programming mode.

STEP 6 — Verify Each Remote

Press Lock/Unlock on each fob — your car should respond now if you done everything correctly.

Remove Emergency Key from door.

Replace the emergency key door cover.

Test that each fob starts the car normally.

If a fob doesn’t work, check its battery and repeat the process. If you bought new key fobs, batteries are not pre installed.

Congrats, you just saved hundred or even thousands depending on your dealership. My dealership wanted $150 per key fob, an extra 25 per fob to cut the Laser cut emergency key, and $450 to program EACH key.

I hope this helps a lot of people or even just 1 save a few bucks. I wanted good quality key fobs with the chevy logo on the back.

This webpage https://www.keylessentryremotefob.co...vrolet/camaro/

Sells good quality OEM key fobs for a fraction of the price. If you have remote start, they do cost a bit more but the steps i posted will work with any brand of remote. Just make sure you purchase the remotes that match your current remote to make sure there is no issues.

As someone who has done this, I can add that I got hung up on programming Remote #2 and it displayed the same message for a really long time, never saying it was ready for #3 (I only had 2 to program). After about 30 minutes, I figured it must be stuck in a loop, so I exited out, but both FOBs had indeed been programmed.

Just an FYI in case something similar happens to anyone.

This is detailed in the manual, too... both when you have two FOB's and when you don't. I've seen similar procedures for the GM trucks as well so I think this is the general process GM uses.

One note that may be helpful to some - this process does not work for cars originally built for the Canada market when you don't have two FOB's already programmed.

Well that's disappointing. I just picked up my 2017 on Friday and it only came with one fob, but it's originally from Toronto. Is there a user friendly way to do it on Canadian cars, or should I resign myself to calling the dealership?

I would try it to see if it -might- work. I don't know what the difference is in the software in the cars that are meant for the Canada market for the US that would alter this behavior, I just know that the manual calls it out for the "I don't have two FOBs" section that it isn't supposed to work.

Thanks for the link for the place selling the remotes. Definitely good prices. I'm tempted to get a third one just to have a spare.

I’d still try it even if it’s from Canada. Should be exactly the same.

Thank you for the link, been putting this off to long, prices seem very good for the fob and no dealer trip.

FYI guys I purchased a third one from the company OP linked. The price was just as advertised and they sent a brand new unit perfectly identical to my two fobs (the physical key is a blank, of course), packaged well, in practically no time.

Think this might be useful info for this thread.

If you want the key blade in the fob cut check with hardware stores near you. Some can do the keys for our cars and they are usually cheaper than going to a locksmith. Obviously need an existing key blade for them to copy off of though.

Did these for my spares, and now all my fobs are just like what you would get from GM with the car or if you paid a dealer for replacement.

One thing to note didn't think any of the big box stores do actual key cutting, at least not near me, ended up going to a Ace Hardware to get mine cut.
