Restart a manual while car is in motion
Here's an odd question:
Has anyone with a manual transmission restarted their car while it was moving just by pushing in the clutch and hitting the start button? I know that when the car is not moving, you need to apply the breaks and push in the clutch for the stater to activate. I've always wonder what happens if the car stalled out while you're driving. Old cars, as long as the clutch was pushed you can start them while moving. Guess I have too much time on my hands.....

Earlier 6th gens actually didn’t need to push the brakes so they probably would have started as well. I do hate how we have to press the brake pedal to start our manual cars

So... older cars you didn't need to use the starter if you were rolling. You just leave the car in the on position put it in the gear appropriate for the speed your rolling and simply dump the clutch.
The drive line would spin the engine over and once the crank sensor sees rpms then everything would just start working. You can do it with automatics too. While driving just leave it in drive and turn the key off. As long as your rolling fast enough you just turn the key back on and it will just start running again. Now modern cars some will still work like that and some won't. Ive had a couple cars that will set a code for vehicle speed detected while rpm not present. And you have to come to a stop and start those. My 2017 SS, i don't need to press the brake, just the clutch. I haven't tried shutting it off while rolling but i guys i can for science. Again I'm not sure with our cars but previously lets say your battery was too weak to start the car. You just push the car in neutral with the key on. Hold the clutch in, put it in 2nd and dump the clutch and it would bump start the car. |

I'm not talking about "popping" the clutch.. I'm wondering if you now need to come to a complete stop to use the starter to start the car. Seems kind-of dangerous is you are on a highway or something.

That's the case for all push button cars not just manuals. Engineers dont design a whole lot of fault tolerance in cars.
In the event your car out of nowhere dies at highway speed, hopefully you can get over to the shoulder because its probably not going to restart with the starter either. Now if you stall it in traffic... then you get to be "that guy". The one that's getting honked at because your holding your brakes and stopped while the cars in front of you are driving off. |

Have done it in my 5th gen a few times. Electric steering assist just goes out.

I don't think the brake pedal needs to be pushed in very far to trigger the sensor. I'd be curious to know if you can push the pedal soft enough to trigger the sensor, but not the actual brakes.
I was kind curious if our cars could be bump started.. I'm sure the computer would freak out though. |

My '17 is also fine with just depressing the clutch to start. I have on plenty of occasions depressed the clutch and the car is on an incline and begins to roll (too lazy to put on the parking brake). No problem, it fires up and I just continue my drive.
I would expect it to do the same at speed, but I'm not gonna go out and kill the engine at 50mph (I'm sure you'd lose power steering immediately as well as brake boost after 2 or 3 applications).

Early SS 6th gen started right up for me with the clutch. But I also had to press my Starter Relay anti-theft fob. lol
