CarPlay unreliable after iOS26/iPhone 17 update

I got a 17 Pro which is on the most up to date iOS 26.0.1, and CarPlay has become pretty frustrating. Some days it will run fine for 15-30 minutes straight, but then the audio cuts out, screen goes blank, and then says "please connect device", and eventually reconnects after about a minute (usually). Sometimes it goes 1-2 minutes between crapping out. I can't figure out any pattern - it does it with audio on or off, maps on or off, etc.

I bought a new certified cable, which works perfectly in our '23 Odyssey, so I don't think it's an issue with the cord.

I know the 2016s are one of the oldest CarPlay compatible interfaces, and I'm wondering if it's a matter of the hardware being too old. Hoping it's a common enough issue that Apple figures out an software update to help...

Anyone else with this issue?

(Hopefully) answered my own question after finding this thread https://discussions.apple.com/thread...k#261620249022

I'm going to disable widgets and see if that works and report back after a few days.

I had the same issue when I upgraded to a 17 Pro. Resolved it by swapping the cable in my car to a data capable cable. Not all USB-C cables are alike. Since you have a 2016 (I have a 2017) you are probably using a USB-C / USB-A cord. Get a data capable dongle and connect a data capable USB-C / USB-A cable. I picked up a couple at Micro Center for about $10 each.

Just to add to this. Android had an update a couple weeks ago and since then I've noticed when my phone connects it will play music then cut out about 10 seconds later then play again almost instantly then do it again at 5 seconds. After that there is no problems.
