If GM removes Carplay and AA, would that stop you from buying?
https://gmauthority.com/blog/2025/10...ered-vehicles/
Of course, this doesn't affect us right now, but for those of you who want other GM vehicles, is this a deal breaker? My Android Auto has an issue with GPS not knowing my location, and it makes using AA for navigation a crap-shoot. Simply put, AA uses the GPS in the car for location and it makes the map bounce around a lot. My GPS issue is unrelated to AA, and part of a high-speed CANBUS issue. As someone with a Toyota Camry that doesn't have AA, the app system Toyota invented is garbage. I suspect anything Gemini-based and GM owned will be garbage also.

No. I just look at the map and figure out where I'm going before i leave. I use Bluetooth for music, but even with that i don't stream music. I just have a few thousand songs on my phone. So if GM removed android auto i wouldn't even realize it happened.

I love carplay because it is literally my phone displayed on the screen and all that it does, however Tesla has it's own pretty nice system that integrates phones. I doubt GM can do that as well. The carplay is such an easy and cheap option to include nowadays though.

I thought AA used the phone's GPS and/or cell tower based location info, not the car's GPS for navigation. It certainly doesn't work when I turn location access off on my phone.
For me, the removal of AA wouldn't be a dealbreaker, but definitely a net negative, I use other apps as well via AA (waze, audio player etc). That said, I've had many more problems with google maps than the built-in nav, but even then, losing AA would make me unhappy.

I would much rather have AA or CarPlay over built in navigation...

GM's tradeoff seems to be in the direction of using a Google Maps app built into the system (as a replacement of factory nav?). Though I'm willing to bet that there will be some form of subscription included somehow. If the integration is successful, I imagine it would require specific profile linking to each driver by key or bluetooth phone connection (or by pin but that would kind of suck). The bluetooth connection would make the removal of CarPlay/AA dumb imo and we already have the key profile per driver.

I already pay for a data plan for the tiny computer in my pocket. I don't need a duplicate subscription for my car's identical apps once the free trial runs out. I won't buy a new car without AA/CP. |

Honestly, I prefer a good phone mount up where its easily viewable and non-distracting and I just navi, music, Teams, whatever from that. CarPlay is nice, but it's slow response and limitations are sometime annoying that exceeds the convenience... fine most of the time but if it went away, no worries.

If the vehicle still retains a USB port, couldn't you simply purchase one of those USB bluetooth AA/Carplay dongles?

I have two cars with CarPlay and two without. For the two without I have two different experiences. One of them, to be honest I don't drive that much. My wife drives it. She's fine with no CarPlay because her Nav system is, in her words, better than Waze. In the other, my Monday - Friday car, I find that the Google Built-in system does 95% of what CarPlay does and the other 5% I could care less about. Waze is available in the App Store and I have it installed, but the Google Maps that is resident is BETTER than Waze. Both of my phones (one iPhone, one Android) connect seamlessly pretty much by the time my butt hits the seat. And I can switch between them at the touch of an icon. That's today's system. What GM is saying they are doing with the next system is a magnitude shift beyond that with capability beyond what CarPlay / Android Auto can do today. So I have zero concern with not having CP/AA available in my next vehicle.
The 5%? I can send text messages to anyone in my phone's contact list and I can receive text messages from anywhere. When I receive text messages I can say "play last text message" and it will play it. What it CANNOT do that I think CP does is I cannot say "Play text messages from Bob Bobberson". Thing is, I can do that from Siri, so technically, I haven't even lost that functionality. I just have to do it differently. Even though I honestly never do that anyway.

I use it every time I'm in the car so it might keep me from buying. It's the one feature that I use more than any other.
The only reason they want to get rid of it is so they can charge you a fee to use their own system through an Onstar subscription. |

I don't use any of that stuff anyway, so no, wouldn't bother me. Hate being attached to my phone, though I acknowledge certain benefits. I pretty much just text and talk. GPS on occasion. Music through my XM on my daily, and USB sticks on my others cars.

Well, that brings us to Reason #1, specifically regarding CarPlay. At the point in time GM would have been negotiating with Apple for implementation of CarPlay Apple had two things going on. They were developing CarPlay 2.0 and they were at least developing a business case for developing their own EV. CarPlay 2.0 has always been intended to allow for the customization of the instrument cluster which would require drawing data from the OBD network. That has always been a big hell naw for GM. If GM had agreed to this it would basically be handing Apple realtime access to how GM EVs operate. So, no CarPlay deal for GM. Reason #2 is that the current Google embedded system already does 95% of what CarPlay / Android Auto do and the system they were discussing in the press release from a couple days ago goes far beyond that in terms of capability. This is the reason GM will be taking CP/AA out of the next generations of ICE vehicles. They have something better. My Camaro and my MR2 have CarPlay. My Equinox EV has the embedded Google system. The Equinox EV infotainment does everything as good as or better than the CarPlay systems except search for past text messages by name. It also does things that CP/AA cannot do like
