What's going on?

I go to car shows with my car and I have been experiencing something strange this year. I have been asked at least 5 times if I am interested in selling my car. These people say they are looking for a ZL1 but, there are very few to find. Also they talk of the prices going up. Is anyone else experiencing this?

I kid you not... I had a Dr. come up to me at a show earlier this year. He told me he loved my car, he loved what I did with it, he loved how through the build was and how spotless I kept it! He said he'd pay me $100,000 cash for it as it sat. I told him, that's not enough to buy it, but, also it's not for sale. He gave me his business card (Ohio State University Hospital - The James Cancer Center) and told me to call him within the next few weeks if I changed my mind. Obviously I never called him. But, this also has been a theme at cars and coffee, people realizing WOW these 6th gens are "gems" and with every day, they are becoming more rare and nothing like them will probably ever be available again! I'm keeping mine until the wheels fall off !

Hmmm really? I'm not sure we do math the same way bro !

ZL1 $84,000 total tax title out the door, $30,000 in mods:

So $114,000
Guy offered: -$100,000
That equals: -$14,000 lose

Not sure who would lose $14,000 on a ZL1 unless they can't afford the car they drive and built!

Not sure if you've ever had a car with modifications done before but I got news for you, ain't nobody in their right mind going to pay you for the $30k in modifications that you put on. It's the harsh reality of modifying these cars, any car for that matter. Anyone that has ever modified a car knows that the new owner doesn't care if you spent $100k on modifications, they aren't going to pay you full price for that lol. So unfortunately for you your math ain't mathin....

No offense, but I agree with clg82.

Cars depreciate the second you drive them off the lot (a few exotics being the exception to the rule). Modifications can actually take away from value, not add to it. It's a labor of love, not profit. When you modify a car, you're making it more for YOU to enjoy, because you know what you like. Many people want stock low mileage cars, not cars modified beyond recognition.

There are always exceptions, but the second I find out a car has anything beyond a cold air filter (which I will immediately change back to stock if I purchase) or aftermarket mufflers, I will shake the owner's hand and say "no thank you, I appreciate your time", and run.

I don't want your cam. I don't want your tune. I don't want your supercharger (added to an LT1). If I want to modify my car, I will do so myself. I don't want somebody else's mess.

Unless you give me a huge discount to offset the gamble I would be taking on unknown install quality and unknown non-factory reliability and unknown street driveability/safety.

Just my perspective, not attacking you at all 2023_ZL1-AUTO.

This is the sad truth about mods. I sold my 2021 ZL1 with 18k in mods for $68k which to me wasn't bad given that I paid $69K for the car when I bought it new in late 2020. The car had 12K miles on it and was immaculate but I sold it locally to a friend of mine. I didn't even bother trying to see if I could get more on the open market because I thought that price was more than fair given the car was 4 years old, and at best, you'll get HALF your mod money back out of it.

Now here I am with a 2024 CT5-V Blackwing which I bought used for $90k which was an absolute steal at that price and I'm about to dump $20k in mods in it come November. Like my ZL1 which I modified within the first 3 months of ownership, if I keep this Blackwing for 4+ years like I did my ZL1, I'll feel just fine selling it for anywhere near 90K if that time comes.

It appears my post flew over clg82's head by a mile or more! What I was trying to convey in my post, about someone offering me -$14,000 (less than I have invested). I will explain in simple terms to fill in the blanks that were missed.

I paid CASH for my ZL1, a total of $84,000+ out the door, including taxes, title, fees, license etc. I didn't even try to negotiate even a penny less from full MSRP/Price. I then voided the warranty with around 99 miles on the car. Why? Because I wanted my car built and the warranty didn't matter to me. I then paid a premium, in CASH for all the mods Katech did on my car, (3 different mods). I've paid upfront in CASH at a premium, to Katech for the upcoming mods they are going to start on my car in a few weeks (900+ rwhp when done).

The building of my car, was done my way. It wasn't done the most affordable or inexpensive way, not even the most efficient way. Did I waste money on mods just to replace them later with other mods, YEP!

So, when someone offered me -$14,000 less than I have invested, it was a laughable offer. I'll NEVER sell my car, not even for $200,000+. Because, 1) I LOVE owning my car, 2) I don't want to buy another and start over, and 3) I don't need the money from selling it. Summary, no amount of money would motivate me to sell my American muscle dream car!

That makes sense, too! lol (although at 200k you could buy another ZL1 with 100k in cash left over in this fun scenario)

Things are worth what someone will pay and since Camaros are out of production some may be willing to pay more, some may be willing to pay for mods done by the previous owner. You never know until you try to sell.

There many different thoughts on selling a car that has been modified. For me this is my last car and I wanted it modded into something I always wanted.

In my original post I said I had people asking me if I wanted to sell my car. What is interesting is no one said anything about not buying my car because of the mods. In fact they wanted my car because of the mods. I had some offers I turned down which were low ball but serious offers. I am not interested at any price. There is a car buyer out there for every car. Cars to me are just the cost of entertainment, they are not an investment to make money there are better ways.

I agree 100% but it would be incredibly hard to turn down $100,000k CASH if I was offered that at a car show.

Still waiting on him to post the doctors card he got so that I can jump on that offer before anyone else on here lollllllllll

They are not made anymore. A ton of them have been stolen. They are relatively cheap to make very fast. The last two years are bringing in high demand and price, which isn't unusual as they are the most refined versions. The 2019 Z06 went through the same thing.

All of that said, if you were selling, $100,000 is a more than fair price even with the mods. If it were me, and someone offered me $200,000.....damn right I would sell it immediately lol. Then I would move on to the next toy.
