Musty Smell
I had been using my 2019 SS as a daily and upon getting near the 40k mark I bought a new car for the daily 40 mile commute and parked my SS in the garage in its usual spot. It’s been sitting for about two weeks and I decided to take it for a spin and noticed right away that there’s a musty smell inside. I was thinking it might be from water in the AC system getting mildewed but not sure.
Anyone else experience this? I’ve always kept interior pretty clean and detailed it before I parked it. |

Did you start / drive the car before smelling the odor? Do you have a sunroof?

Check your a/c drain just for peace of mind. It could be clogged. If it has a sunroof then check the front drains.
Moisturizer control is a really good idea. Cheap way could be a bucket of rice. Baking soda should help pull the smell out. Just leave a bowl of it inside for a couple days. Gain dry laundry detergent sprinkled in the carpet and then vacuum it up after a couple days is how one of my detailers at work used to do it. |

Is there anything in the car that could cause the smell? A shirt, gym towel, shoes, etc. Check under the seats, in all of the storage compartments, trunk.
Was it raining the last time you drove it? Interior might have just been a little damp and then the car sat closed up. Opening the windows for a couple of days in the garage would air it out. Check for mice. In my Silverado, a mouse made a nest on top of the cabin air filter, using the hood insulation as nest material. That smelled musty and gross. Once I cleaned it out and replaced the filter, the smell went away.

No sunroof but I did just find a few microfiber towels behind the seat in the back floor board that I used to dry my head and tailights after a wash.
That’s probably what it is! They were well hidden just by being there (we all know how visible that spot is). I’ll air it out and see if it goes away. Thank you! |

In addition to what others have said, don't fully close the windows when parked in the garage. You can also leave the hvac outside vent open.

Such an absolutely horrible design... Had that issue in my Silverado a couple of times. The worst part is that the filter is above the circulation fan, and pulling the filter out causes all of the stuff on top to be 'scraped off'l because of how the filter goes through the opening and then it all falls into the fan. Something that I started doing was getting piece of cardboard (think broken down box from tissues) and slipping it in under the filter before sliding the filter out. Cut it to the exact width of the opening and make sure it goes in to the back of the filter... Anything that gets scraped off when you slide the filter out lands on the cardboard and doesn't fall into the fan...

I had to pull the blower motor out once as well because the shell of a nut or something fell in and was rattling... After dealing with the time it took to remove and reinstall (not hard, just ridiculously time consuming to tip it over and get the debris to fall out), I decided I wouldn't deal with that again and came up with the process of using the thin cardboard material.
