Wheel stud wearing out

Is this stud wearing out or is this normal? The stud looks narrower in the last 5 turns or so.

Its a guide to help the nut center on the stud before trying to catch the threads. The idea is to limit cross threading.

Wish that was standard on ALL cars !! Some you have to punch out cheese soft stock stuff and upgrade.

this is why you start them by hand, get those first couple threads on before you hit it with an impact or you'll be replacing wheel studs.

LOL- I always thought that car makers knew that tire shops don't "finger tighten" and in order to avoid/minimize cross threading they tapered the stud so the rapidly spinning lug nut could have a chance to get lined up with the stud!
Of course you're right about how they should be started by hand, but it takes a few seconds and time is $ at the tire shop- and you are likely to not know they
mangled your stud until you need to remove it again.

I start lugnuts with an impact but since I've been doing it for so long i know how to control trigger pull.
But my daughter.... i was teaching her how to do work on her car and if she pulled the trigger it was all or nothing. Luckily i was able to catch it quick and a thread chaser was able to fix it.
