Laziness no more! (Oil Question)
Took my car to the dealer to get brake fluid changed and oil changed. I was contemplating on doing it myself but buying all new tools and the slight chance I sell the car I thought the cost would be negligible (+/- $40 - $80 compared to DIY) plus I wouldn’t have to dispose of anything; it would be done quicker possibly.
Anyway long context. It ends up being the (FL)dealer put in AC Delco 5w-30. I swear this car was getting Mobil 1 for its entire life.. however I was proven wrong. They been putting AC Delco for the longest; I haven’t had any issues but just wondering ifs properties are good at not breaking down. The car sits for so long now that not having a high quality oil I’m just wondering if I should just flush and put a better oil? Overthinking.. but domino affect my laziness.

I use 5w-30 synthetic blend.
Cars arent as unforgiving as people think. |

Street driving? No problem... Track? If you see higher oil temps it's less than ideal as you want w40. I switched to M1 Supercar 5w50 as it's primarily for ax/track.
Less of a big deal than most might assume, imo, especially if your change intervals are short.

But thank you this puts me more at ease; maybe I’ll change it out sooner then the 12mo and DIY this time around.

There's nothing really wrong with the 5W30 oil as long as you aren't tracking it. If you do decide to do a track day, then yes, you will definitely need to flush it and use a 40 or 50 weight oil.
As far as the AC Delco oil - As long as it has a dexos1 rating (which it does), then it'll meet all the necessary specs for street driving. And that oil very well could be made by Mobil 1, anyhow. GM doesn't make their own oil, they are buying it from a supplier. In any case, your car will be fine with that weight and type of oil. One thing I would recommend, though, definitely check how much oil is in the car. Dealers often have the lowest level employees doing the oil changes, and I've seen numerous instances where mistakes were made and the cars weren't filled. The car won't give you an oil level warning until it's very low. So make sure they filled it up completely and you'll be fine. |

My dealer puts in what the manual says.
They enter the VIN and follow instructions. Is your dealer an idiot? |

Sorry to tell you but the shitball techs that get paid bare minimum is the ones changing your oil. You may get charged what the manual says but pulling the dipstick to actually check is the last thing on their mind.

I’m going to scour through the manual but am I crazy. I swear it was mobil1 only in our car? I thought we had a badge too but I think that was for the later years or maybe I’m just making things up now.
When I got service done in NJ I was positive it was Mobil 1. Thank you all for the responses though, appreciate it!

I do my own oil changes and use 0W-40 as recommended by GM. Not messing around with dealer incompetence or outright deception on such an important and relatively simple task.

Before anyone brings up the addendum from 2019, NO dealer actually knows about it/remembers it. I went to purchase oil a few years ago for my prior Camaro (2016) and they gave me 5w-30. I then asked for 0w-40 and they told me that will affect my powertrain warranty. So to your point, yeah dealers are idiots, but if op has an older Camaro, they followed instructions correctly. Op, what if I told you Mobil one is the supplier for AC Delco oil? You have nothing to worry about if you’re not tracking the car. Do not dump out good oil.
