Out Of Warranty
So, just asking around since the 6th gen Camaro has been around, and pretty much many of us don't carry any more warranty, and our Camaros are starting to get up there in miles. If your Camaro starts to need repairs, say, like maybe electrical or mechanical, or the check engine light comes on and the car starts running rough, and you don't have diagnostic equipment to test, and you have to take it in and pay for it, how is everyone dealing when these issues arise? When something is going to cost over a thousand dollars to repair, do you start to make a decision if it's time to trade it in? Has any Camaro owner come across this dilemma? Luckily, my 2019 is running fine, but I just had to pay $700 because my driver's side door lock wouldn't lock, even when you put it in drive or park; the door wouldn't lock at all.

That's why I sold my 2016 to get a 2023. I only had 28k miles, but seven years is a long time! I plan on keeping this car into my old age (which is at least a few more years).

This isn't specific to the Camaro, it's a decision we all have to make for all our vehicles coming out of warranty...

The way i look at it is like everything in my life. If another man can do it then so can I. Ive got 2 hands and a brain like the majority of you guys. If i have to learn how to do something to be able to do it, then once I'm done i will have one more thing i know how to do. That being said, sometimes it's not practical to learn how to do something just to keep another man from touching my broken stuff. But me being from Texas... im stubborn as hell. So i still figure out how to fix it.
I went to my EX's house when my daughter was little to pick her up. She was in the floor trying to figure out how to assemble this new vacuum they got. Her new guy was just sitting in a chair letting her struggle with it. I got it from her while i was waiting and completely assembled it in just a few mins with no instructions. There is nothing like the feeling of passive aggressive dominance lol. The moral of the story is, try to learn. Try to fix things, try to rely less on other people knowing things and more on your own two hands and brain. Would you have another man come over and satisfy your wife because you don't know how? Or would you figure out how to? |

I typically dump the car at 30-36 months. This ZL1 i plan to keep for two more years though but it'll still be covered. I do have a good shop close by, a big "goodyear" branded tire shop that I'd go to. I doubt I'd ever walk in to a dealer unless it's catastrophic and on a wrecker.

Depends what’s out there when my car is out of warranty. If there’s still affordable stuff out there that I like and would like to try, I’ll get rid of my car once the warranty is up. I do not trust the post covid 6.2’s at all.
If there’s nothing out there that I like that I can afford, I’ll build my engine and if I have to the trans as well. I track my car so if the motor hasn’t let go by the time the warranty is up, I’m sure it eventually will (nothing to do with the reliability, I just know you can’t expect tracked engines to last forever). A heads cam with possible big cubes SS 1LE is something that I’d like to own. That being said if I had the ability to afford either a Cayman GT4 or C8 Z06 I’d make the change. I don’t see that happening though by the time my warranty is up haha.

I just bought a 2025 Chevy 2500 LTZ Trail Boss and have used the same dealer and salesman for years. This is the first time he has said I highly recommend an extended warranty. He does this with friends and family especially. Just too many electronics and computers to make it simple to fix. 8 year 80k extended warranty for piece of mind. Those days are gone unless you buy a classic that's easy to work on. The more modern, the more difficult to work on. And very expensive to fix as well. OP, you have 2 options....buy newer and keep some type of warranty, or take your chances.

That's the problem with these cars today guys so many dam electronics and modules not like it was 30 years ago replacing the distributor or distributor cap and rotor tuning up your own car now you need a laptop to track and diagnosed which modules or ecm went bad and speaking of that that's what killed my drivers side lock a bad bcm module and then they found out the latch was bad also this was my first minor repair so after diagnostic test labor and parts and all came to $750.

Steering back to cars, modern vehicles have a crapton of software that make repairs more difficult, and even though I for one could definitely fix or enhance at least the infotainment part, it's locked down like Fort Knox and I don't have guys on the inside to help. The "tunes" that we run are just data/configuration tables or simplified (quantized) function outputs, they are not the software itself, so that doesn't really count. One more thing, which is an even bigger problem: tools. To properly fix these cars, you need a ZILLION different tools, many are very expensive, it makes no sense to me to buy thousands of $ worth of them just for my Camaro, then use them once in a blue moon. I fix what I can with a reasonable amount of tools that I have, the rest goes to Ted Jannetty or the dealership.

When i have a car come in and i tell the customer what the failure is, i don't come back and add more things to fix the same problem. I would have been up their ass about it. Made them put the original bcm back in and replace the latch. The scantool needed to read codes and command lock function through the bcm is around $500 on amazon. Its worth it to have for a precheck before a dealer visit if anything. |

Have heard terrible things about the warranty companies that have commercials and take monthly payments. Also you have headers. Warranty = void for your engine just on that alone. These aftermarket companies can be just as brutal if not more brutal when it comes to finding a reason to void your warranty/get out of doing the work.

I ended up making a phone call to Chevrolet Corporate and explained to them my situation: that my extended warranty had expired. I asked if there was any way that I could purchase more warranty on my 2019 Camaro with 45,000 miles for at least one year. I was told that as long as the vehicle is less than 8 years old and has less than 80,000 miles, the answer was yes. So I headed to the Chevrolet dealership where I purchased my Camaro and talked to the financial manager. I was surprised at the price of getting a GMAC warranty for 12 months with a $100 deductible and 12,000 miles for $550. The reason for just one year is that I just retired, and my wife's warranty will be running out on her vehicle next September, the same time as the Camaro. We plan on trading both vehicles in for a nice down payment on a newer vehicle and going down to one vehicle, cutting our insurance by 50%. But at least the Camaro has a warranty, which is a big relief and my wife won't be pushing to trade both cars now and I can enjoy the camaro for another year.
