Question remote start use with manual transmission

Is there a way to utilize the remote start operation on a manual transmission vehicle?

Can it be used as a security feature to trigger a relay or something like that?

You'd have to capture the CAN signal yourself and for that, BCM software would have to be modified, which I don't know any way of pulling off as a DIYer. This isn't just a "tune" or calibration that changes data structures, you'd actually have to rewrite the software, sign it, upload it into the BCM and then have the rest of the architecture accept it.

If you can find someone on the inside with access to the old MyLink 2.5 software, which GM definitely should open source by the way, then sure, it's technically feasible. Chris White might be able to help, but this is a long shot even then.

No idea why I can't type today, sorry about the typos. Might need some AI crutch soon

I'd still contact him, if only for some info on what modifications are and aren't possible through his company.

In the old days you could just hotwire the clutch starter interrupt switch and install a simple remote start module. Highly unsafe if you forget to park it in neutral but that’s what people did (as me how I know)

Today due to countless reasons, besudes lawsuits and safety, the ECM not only looks for the clutch switch to be closed but also the brake pedal to start the car. And if you’re thinking “why not hot wire them both”, then your brake lights will be on all the time even with the car off.

I was not looking to utilize the remote start for its intended purpose.

I wanted to utilize the remote start button on the FOB for another purpose.

If there was a way to program the car’s ECM to read the transmitter signal of the remote start button. You can’t reprogram the remote transmitter to output any other signal that the coded signal to trigger the remote start sequence on an automatic, but I suppose there’s a very sophisticated way to program the ECM to take that signal and do something other than start the car. Like the other posters have said you’d need to have full access into the software architecture of the vehicle which is going to be difficult to obtain unless you basically know an engineer. Even the dealer can’t access things at that level.
