How to Confirm if My SS 1LE Has an Aftermarket Camshaft?
Hey ya'll, I recently picked up a 2023 Camaro SS 1LE and it was sold to us as stock but it came with Nick Williams 103mm Throttle Body, MSD Atomic AirForce Intake Manifold, Roto-Fab Cold Air Intake, Kooks 1 7/8" Long Tube Headers, High-Flow Catalytic Converters, 3” Non-Resonated X-Pipe, DSX Flex Fuel Kit.
I had a shop verify if its been tuned already. I'm now wondering if there's an aftermarket camshaft in here. The entire engine has blue markings all over it, im assuming it was once fully torn down, and at idle the cabin shakes a bit and theres a mild lope, nothing like a lope you'd see on instagram but its definitley noticable. Anything I can do to detect if there is an aftermarktet cam? Thanks! |

Probably can tell by seeing what settings have been changed using something like HPTuners.
I would expect more spark advance compared to stock 1LE. I bet there are many things beyond that. Maybe post this in the tuners sub-forum. |

From your description it sounds like a stage 1 cam was installed. Stock cam engines don't shake the cabin but, there can be a slight lope to the sound. JMO

Post an idle clip on here. Probably get as good of an estimate as any other way, other than taking off parts.
If you really need to find out, you can pull a valvecover and measure the lift of the pushrod. Should give you an idea of how aggressive too if it is. -Geoff

I can tell you my cam has a lope, and the car shakes with the lope.
That said I believe that can be tuned down some so its not so bad, but with a cam even a stage 1 cam like mine it will shake the car a bit at idle. And when it happens it is pretty obvious. A stock cam literally will not rock the car with the lope, a stage 1 cam definitely will.

I thought the obvious sign of an aftermarket cam was exhaust rattle? You saying you notice the car rockin but no exhaust ticks/chirps/rattle to the almighty chop?

I don't have a cam or headers (I know I should to really gain the potential benefits of these parts) but I noticed with my MSD intake (with a 95mm TB and Solar adaptor) occasionally requires a re-torque O/W upon start-up it will fall into a loping idle that sounds just like a cam. Never got an error code or other dashboard notice. But when I snug the bolts back to spec, it idles fine.
Its 10 M6 limiter bolts that secure the IM to the cylinder heads (3 passes rotating from side to side), until they all reach 89 INCH/lbs. Also get the 4 M6 that secure the TB to your MSD manifold to 89in/lbs. The 3 Allen head bolts on top of the manifold and the perimeter pinch bolts (holds the 2 halves of the MSD together) should be torqued to 75in/lbs. I did use blue loctite on most but not all the mounting bolts- should have gotten them all but I forgot. It is imperative you don't use a "dork" wrench to estimate when these bolts are secure. It's very easy to over-tighten and do more harm than good while doing this. Have fun and enjoy that Camaro! |

dont laugh too hard for this but isnt there a "old mans trick" of putting your hand just outside of the tailpipe and feeling the air patter? I had an old man show me this at a car show and at the time it kind of made sense. I was also a 20 year old at the time so he couldve just been joking me.
