LT1 cam questions

‘24 2SS 6 speed here……

I’m thinking of caming it and doing the AFM/DOD hardware delete. I know AFM is not active in the 6 speed’s ECM but we all know these lifters are…. Not the greatest to say the least.

My uncle has been a hard core mechanic for 60 years and still does full engine tear downs at 76. He has his own complete shop at his house and mentioned Crane cams. I know they used to be big with the old-school muscle cars but do they make cams for the modern Gen V LT1? I don’t think my uncle has worked anything modern for a while, he’s always got some’s 2nd Gen Vette, ‘late 60s or Fox body Mustang in the shop, and a ‘69 Chevelle chassis he’s restoring right now is in it and you could eat off the frame rails it’s so spotless…..

So has anyone used Crane cams in our engines?

Crane went out of business in 2009. If you try to go to their website, you'll find that CraneCams.com redirects to CompCams.com now.

There are still lots of great options, custom and off-the-shelf, available for your car from various vendors.
It all depends on what you want to do.
But keep in mind that a GenV cam swap is a little more involved than an old-school SBC cam swap. It's usually done as part of a larger project.

Check out the BTR 220 or Cam Motion Titan 1. James is spot on...cam swap on this engine is a lot more involved. Engine has to be pretty much torn down to the short block. While you are there might as well port the heads, change the oil pump, new chain, and do at least a LT2 manifold.

Yeah he asked if I would want to port the heads wheel he’s doing it and I said we might as well.

He did tell me he’d do it engine-out and make me take the chassis back home while he’s doing it so I know it’d be down a while. He’s got a flat bed with a winch and an ‘05 2500 Silverado so hauling it won’t be a big deal.

I only have 14,000 miles on it

Thanks for clarifying that. I was a little confused when I went to their website.

I think my uncle really called it “Crane” because he said he’d have to ask his “Crane guy” about the cam specs. I think he just called it that because that’s what he’s called his cam guys for 50 years even though the company Crane out of business but his “cam guys” get them from the other sources now.

He is. He let me drive a 1938 Pontiac straight 8 when I was about 13. That’s how I learned to drive stick. He’d redone the entire electrical system in it with modern wiring then cloth covering over the modern insulation to make it period correct.

I can’t tell you how many cool cars I remember him working on since I was a kid….. GTOs, Cougars, lots of Corvettes (he owns 2 himself, an ‘72 350 4 speed and a 2013 427 6 speed), and a full tear down and rebuild of a 2 speed power glide on a real ‘57 Bel Air.

He should be a featured guest on Barrett-Jackson
