If I were you, I wouldn't sweat it too hard, especially not to a degree that hurts my relationship with my daughter.

Splitters can scrape, it's a fact of life, you can easily hit a hole or even just a lower "valley" you can't see coming off a driveway or hill after dusk, and there it is. Low car, long hood and no front camera either, so first time Camaro drivers can have a hard time judging how far they can creep forward.

My advice is to touch it up with some matte black paint, then apply a couple pieces of hard rubber from of this great splitter protection kit to the lowest spots, then keep grinning even when the splitter scrapes, let that kid enjoy the drive and not go sour if she makes a small mistake. In fact, that's exactly what I did on my car that has an SS 1LE splitter.

My daughter and I are super close and at no time when this happened did I give her the impression that I was as upset over the whole thing.
Will she drive my car again. Probably

I was just venting to you guys and I got what I needed from all of you.
Thanks I'm over it now!

Let your kids start driving the family car when they’re 12-13 like my parents, grandparents, and uncle let me. Let them drive just up and down your street or back road for just a few minutes, with you in it of course. So by the time they take drivers ed they’re super comfortable, competent, confident, and careful about driving. Then when they get behind the wheel of your ZL1 they’ll do fine.

This is what I was thinking when I saw the OP's pic of the damage. "Uhhhhh, the splitter is not cracked or damaged and the scrape is on the underside where no one can see it. Why is he talking about replacing it, and why are others talking about repairing it?"

We all love our G6s here. We also individually land on different points of the spectrum for the question of "how important is it to maintain the "pristine" condition of the appearance vs when it the car was new. But even if you are on the far end of the spectrum (barely drive it, keep the paint perfect), don't you have to draw the line somewhere, ......like maybe the underside surfaces?

If anybody has a scratched, OEM 2019+ SLE front splitter (but otherwise in good shape) that you are deciding to replace, please let me know and I happily take it off your hands. I'd like to have a spare.

It’s just stuff. What that matters is your time with your daughter.

A few years ago, my oldest was playing outside, in the snow. He noticed my ‘95 Roadmaster was covered in ice and wanted to help. He went to the shed and got a dethatching rake. He then used the rake to wack the ice. I heard it, from around the house. When I came around the corner it was just in time to see he was holding the tip of the handle and had the rake at full extension, over his head. Before I could say anything, he powered slammed the head of the rake into the windshield, then, drug it down the hood and driver’s side fender. I started yelling for him to stop. He was so proud of himself. He said something to the effect of, “Look, dad! I’ve been working hard to get your car ready.” It took all I had to not completely lose my shit. He wasn’t being malicious. He saw a problem and was working a solution. It’s not the solution I was hoping for, but it was nice of him to take it upon himself to help.

Shockingly, the damage was minor. Just some paint transfer from the yellow rake handle onto the fender.

We had one of those rakes growing up. Reading your story, I was expecting a lot of paint damage from the metal tines, but surprised it turned out so well. I'm sure that made it easier (at the time) for you to focus on how your son was trying to help his Dad rather than the negative effects on the vehicle.

Did that roadmaster by chance have the wood paneled sides? I just saw one of these a week ago and couldn't belive the blast from the past.

I let my 21 yr old son drive my 1LE when I first got it. He was used to the 5 speed in his car and couldn’t believe how nice the Tremec shifted. He’s probably driven it maybe 10 times or so, with no issues. I did explain to him about the low front and how turning off traction control will be instant death if he decides to punch it. He will probably end up with it eventually so I’d rather have him have good memories about the car vs the “car my dad wouldn’t let me touch”

I thought maybe she curbed a wheel or tore up the oil pan or subframe. A scratch under the splitter that nobody can even see and has no functional detriment?

This is minor at best. If you're like most of us you have precious few moments with your kid and them being even remotely interested in driving such a special car is a huge win. Laugh it off, move on, and know that nobody but you will care. Hopefully she'll look back on her experience being proud you trusted her and not that you got the red mist over a hidden scratch.

My son drove my 2020 2SS vert, my 21 challenger scat wide, my 2023 ZL1 and my 2024 stang without me in it. He was 19 when he drove the 2SS.

Not scared. I was the one who taught him how to drive fro. 15.5 years old. In the rain, in the snow, in fog, in the fog and rain, on the highway, in parking lots...

Driving mine home scraped the side winglet of mine (damn Indiana roads). $100+ to replace just leaving it for now. As others have said it’s a memory and a story to tell

My 15 year old has his permit, he has driven my ZL1 a few times, I put this on to embarrass him. He is actually a good driver and has well over the required hours for his license already.

my step son is 5 and I let him drive it, In my lap in the parking lot of course. I feel like letting someone experience a car like ours is something theyll probably never forget. And plus, the more we let other people drive the less people will think mustangs are cool
