Another Rattle/Ticking Thread - Passenger Rear

Edit: Found source in post #7

I've been hearing this ticking noise for over a year. When I was in warranty, the dealer said they couldn't hear it, I can't not hear it now. Now I'm only covered by CPO and Powertrain, and from what I've been told, CPO won't do jack for this.

Happens while cruising if I'm giving it slight gas or hitting bumps. This also happens when the vehicle is at a standstill and in drive if I creep forward and then hit the brakes, I can make it tick once or twice. Doesn't tick in reverse and doing the same thing.

You can hear the ticking throughout the video; here is the timestamps to the most audible point. You will hear it in the first second of the video as well.

0:25 - 0:31

This video was taken in March, and it's the same noise today.

I'm going to take the wheel off tomorrow and look around/clean the mating surfaces, and will also be ordering rear diff fluid to do a fluid exchange.

If I can't find the source, then probably crawl back to the dealer and have someone sit in the car with me.

Video from today, I’m on the accelerator the slightest bit and then completely let off it which you can hear right before the 3 second mark. The ticking goes away right after letting off. I could keep doing it to bring the ticking back every time

Sometimes in these videos, it’s a little difficult to hear the noise the same as you do. However, I can tell you that I do have a rattling sound from the rear passenger interior area of my car. I believe it is the vent flaps for the HVAC. There is a whole panel of them back there, and they are made of hard plastic so as the air escapes, they flap back-and-forth.

Try turning the climate system all the way off with windows up and listening. Not sure if it’s the same noise you’re getting but it’s noticeable in my car.

Here is a thread on the topic I’m referring to:

I wish the OP of that thread kept the video up, though I don’t think my noise is the same. Mine is always present over 25mph on bumps/slight acceleration no matter if the AC/Fan is on or off.

I did take off the wheel and check the suspension bolts along with both axle and driveshaft bolts. Everything appeared to be in line. I forgot to check heat shields down there. My next oil change I’m going to push for someone to do a ride along, don’t know if my CPO will cover it.

I found what was causing the rattle, next step is seeing what to do to fix it. I tightened the bolt but it still rattles. Only stops when I put my finger against the bolt and hold. I'm thinking of using a foam washer or similar, and I'll see if the dealer has any ideas, have the oil change coming up.

I realize now that the previous video and probably this video you can't hear the ticking off normal speakers. I'm able to hear it with volume up and with headphones on or right up against my phone speaker.

Glad you found it. I’m sure you can take care of that fairly easy and get back to enjoying your car.

Thanks for sharing what you found.

Appreciate the help, one (hopefully) final update.

It wasn’t the screw itself, rather the sheet metal that’s vibrating causing the ticking noise. (I tried a star washer on the bolt first and electrical tape with no luck then went back under to see again)

I was able to make the ticking noise by pushing up from beneath at that certain area. Didn’t happen pushing from the top and if I held the top it wouldn’t make the ticking noise.

After some deliberation, I settled on hammer first then silicone RTV if that didn’t work.

I hammered these two sections with a small hammer, not enough to make impressions or dents. (Will take after photo once it stops raining)

No more ticking.

Nice effort to find the elusive tick.. I wouldn’t have gone that far to find it. But, if mine starts to tick, that’ll be the first place I’ll look. Thanks for sharing.
