On a lighter note, you've inadvertently just re-primed the 4 wonky lifters and verified that your AFM system is still working

At least they got some nice "fresh" (6 month old) oil with a whopping 450 miles on it...

I have heard long oil change intervals (lots of miles, etc) are a big problem with the AFM/DOD Lifters... This car has never had oil in it longer than 2,500 miles or so (once), most other changes have been far shorter... (505, 1,500, 4,000, 5,975, 7,800, 9,468, 10,785 miles)... This car is currently at around 11,200 miles and has had 7 oil changes so far... (not to mention 4 differential fluid changes at 505, 1,500, 5,975 & 9,468 miles, all with GM OEM fluid) Every single one with Mobil 1 0W-40 Dexos 2 oil...

My Motto...

"Fluids are cheap, components are not... Do the labor yourself, at least you'll know it is done right..."

I've stuck with 0W-40 Supercar, and paid for oil analysis with each oil change. Since I'm averaging 20k mi. per year, I'm doing a lot of highway driving. Analysis results have shown good life remaining even after 6,500 miles, though that is my personal limit for this engine. The analysis is my piece of mind that all is well inside.

Daily Driver mileage update: 45k mi. @ Mar 2025
New Engine @ 22,600 mi. due to dealer confusing bad gas with a bad engine.

Looks like you drive yours a LOT more than I do, if mine was my daily driver I'd be doing 3,000 - 4,000 mile changes...

I was doing the changes at 20% oil life, but knowing I can go lower allows for flexibility when I travel. Even with their analysis, I don't go below 10% oil life.

I know this is a tangent from the topic. I would recommend the X3 or the newer X4 over Supercar. It has better high-temp/high-shear numbers and resists viscosity breakdown better than Supercar, and it's still Dexos R rated and therefore officially approved. It's not a big deal unless you track or autocross your car, but the reduction in viscosity that they mention would improve if you switched.

Great input, thanks! We will see how the results change!

Just an update, I contacted Range and they asked me to send in the unit for evaluation and repair/replacement... I had to pay shipping to the ($11) but they sound like they are going to take care of the rest... The unit was 4 years out of warranty but it looks like they are likely going to stand behind their product... I'll update more if/when I get it back...

One thing to keep in mind with the range afm disabler, is that it also prevents the O2 and catalyst monitors from running. In states that have ODB2 inspection checks, you need to unplug it for a few days prior to let the monitors all complete. Here in NY, they only allow 1 incomplete monitor so my 2023 SS vert failed initially and had to go back a few days later.

Thanks for the heads up, I still have about 2 years before I need to get smogged, with any luck will be out of Kalifornia before it comes due...

If you have patience, hp tuners is more than worth it. Buy what you need, tune out all the things you need to. Then wait. Talk to people offer a service of doing the same thing or similar things for a small fee. $100-$200 over what it cost you. Before you know it, hp tuners has more than paid for itself.
