PS4s - Snap Oversteer?

I was at Summit Point Raceway this weekend for an event and was pushing my car pretty hard, working on my line and trying to improve my transitions through corners 5-9. Going into 5 hard and preparing for 6, I experienced snap oversteer with a rear end slide of about 20-25 degrees that was thankfully caught by Stabilitrak.

It really caught me off guard, because what I've experienced in the past when pushing hard into a corner on these tires, is a balanced reduction in grip from front to back, feeling the tires sliding a bit and then easing up on the gas a bit to bring back full grip.

I've heard from more than one person that the Goodyear F1 Supercar 3s are the best ones for the car, but I've had such good experiences with PS4s on my previous cars I decided to go that route. They offer such great rain/wet performance, in addition to the high performance capabilities, I thought it was a no brainer.

Anyone had similar experiences with PS4s and then gone on to a different tire?

For some background, I have a 2SS with 1LE suspension and mag ride. Also, 1LE factory wheels, so I'm running the 285s up front and 305s in the back.

The temperature outside was about 70, and I was about 20 minutes into my session and had started to notice that this timeframe was a bit of a dropoff point with the tires starting to feel a little greasier than I'd like during every session.

The car isn't a daily, but I do like having the ability to drive it whenever with those PS4s on there. And I'm not quite ready to shell out another $1500 for tires, but if I have to, I will.

ps4s are perfect for the street! a little too soft after running 200tw tires but awesome tire. I have used them on 3 track days back in the day and thinking about it on how i progressed over the years, they are too soft and a not a great compound for the track! like at all. Too soft, cant take the heat, and will lose grip after 3-4 laps. understeer everywhere in a 6 gen thats very heavy and yeah just go with supercar 3's. even the stock runflats that come on the stock camaro ss will be better!

they are too the best budget and track tires for the price! they are capable in the wet and cold if driven like a normal driver. in the rain they're tolerable but gotta remember they are a semi track tire more than a street tire so you WILL get some slip in the rain and when cold out! buts its manageable.

Question... I have an old set of SC3s that came with my 1LE wheels. I just put PS4s on it for daily driving but have these SC3s that I was going to sell but am considering hanging onto them for track days. Just need a second set of rims. They're about half worn but are from 2017. Will they bee too old and hard to use on the track reliably or will they be good after they get some heat in them?

What's the manufactured date on the used SC3 tires?

Can’t compare it to a 200tw tire. I prefer the conti ecs02 to the ps4s. I find the ps4s to be too mushy.

I would not run them. They are pretty aged out at this point and will be hard/low grip.

If you are going to go with a 2nd set of wheels for tracking, consider going to a 19"x11" with 305/30R19 on all 4 corners. Wheels are lighter, more tire options, car will be more balanced (less understeer) and you can rotate tires. But, you'll need camber plates and will need to run at least -2.75deg front camber.

From a distance we can't really tell why your car lost grip like that. The tires could behave differently now due to age and heat cycles; that can happen before the tread is worn off. Likewise, you could have overheated the tires, or it could be a combination of the tire's number of heat cycles and the heat you got into them on that session.

Other causes of your incident could be that one of your rear wheels got out of alignment and toed out. There could have been something on the pavement like oil or coolant that made it slick. You might have done something different with your inputs that upset the balance of the car, or you just entered the corner a few mph faster than before.

PS4s are a highly respected tire. Not a great track tire, but pretty good for a tire that is street-oriented. I have heard a lot of praise for that tire over the years, and never heard that it's subject to snap oversteer.

The SC3 is a better choice for track use than the PS4, and is one of the best street tires for track use. I don't recommend the harder-core 200TW tires if your primary use is street driving.
IMO, a 2017 date code SC3 is likely compromised by its age. I have similarly old tires on my sedan, but I don't track it. I wouldn't do more than street driving and autocross on an old set of tires.

Need video to see what your inputs did to upset the car.

I wouldn't blame the tires. The tires alone aren't subject to snap oversteer, that is more of a product of driving dynamics. I suspect you did something in the car that created the spin.

With a different car that I experienced regular snap oversteer with the cause and the fix was sway bar configuration. Tires were not a factor. A heavy rear bar and a light front bar can lead to the condition and reduced with a heavier front bar.
