Recently picked up a 2017 1LT with quite a few miles, but it was running great. My wife noticed it sometimes shifted a little slow- either from 1st to 2nd or 2nd to 3rd. Sure enough, it threw the dreaded check engine light with a transmission fluid temperature sensor code.
The next time she drove it to the store, the light wasn’t on. But about 2-3 weeks later (today), it came back. She checked the trans temp on the dash, and it was bouncing all over the place, anywhere from around 30°F down to 0°F. I can't afford to take it to a dealership, and I’m planning to change the fluid & filter this weekend. Can the sensor in these cars be changed yourself? Is it something that really needs to be fixed ASAP (like this weekend)? Note: I’m comfortable working on cars and have a high mechanical aptitude, but I’m also smart enough to ask for advice when stepping into uncharted territory with this model. |

It will just keep throwing the code until you get the sensor cable replaced. I bought a cheap hand held scanner and kept turning the CEL off for a few months until I could get it to the dealership to have the cable replaced. It will be fine to drive it and there are YouTube video son how to replace the sensor cable but I suggest letting someone else do it because the fluid has to be drained, part replace and refilled. It was just under $600 for the dealership to do mine. Good luck.

Mine was always P0700 until the week before I had the harness replaced, then it was throwing the P0711 code also.

P0700 is generic transmission fault. You will find that in the ecm . It's pretty much telling you to look into the tcm for a more specific code. Which would be your p0711.
P0700 is like going to the doctor and saying your leg hurts but not giving any other information. |

It's only $200 if you do it all yourself (new sensor, new fluid, new filter, new gasket) assuming you have all the tools. New sensor pins line up perfectly with the old one (no guessing what plugs into where). See post below.
https://www.camaro6.com/forums/showp...&postcount=150 Mine use to do the same thing and sometimes wouldn't register at all. I drove for a few years like that and I'm close to 161,000 miles so I would safely say it doesn't require immediate attention. Only takes a few hours. Video below helped me a lot. Just make sure you get the right parts and fluid.
