Flex Fuel - Ok to switch up fuel anytime?
Hello all,
I have a Camaro SS and really comtemplating whether or not to get the flex fuel kit. There is one E85 station near my house but I don’t want to solely rely on this station for all my fuel needs, or any E85 stations I might have to hunt for. So my question is, once the flex fuel kit is installed for E85 and 91, would it be ok to mix the fuels once in a while or even just fill all 91 one week, E85 the next, maybe a mix of any combinations the following week? From reading forums, it really sounds too good to be true if I can use either fuel at any time or in any combination of the fuels. Thanks for any advice. |

Sometimes the truth can be that good. The flex fuel kit with the appropriate tune allows you to use anything from E10 (91 or 93) to E85, and the ECM will adjust automatically, because the kit for the Camaro contains a sensor that reports alcohol content in real time, it doesn't operate like a switch between two fuel types. You can mix fuels as you wish with this kit.
Note that if your car has any power adders but no fuel system improvements, you may not be able to run full E85, because it requires 25-30% more fuel for E85 (btw this also means your fuel economy will drop by this much), and the stock fuel pumps won't be able to keep up at higher loads.

The flex fuel sensor will allow you to run Ethanol free gasoline all the way up to 85% ethanol and any blend in-between.

I felt so weird putting E85 in my car for the first time, and even weirder filling up the next tank with 91. But it works! lol

I have used the sensor for over a year on my track dedicated SS 1LE. The "flex fuel" sold locally near me advertises E51-E83, though I have found it to generally be 70-80%. The sensor is awesome and makes it worry free.
The fuel is cheaper, but it will take years to recoup costs, as you need the HP credits, tune, sensor kit, and an O2 sensor/gauge with bung to do it right. For me, it was about the cooler burning fuel on track. A few extra HP at the top of the power band was nice also . . . the power shows itself on long stretches when I'm racing with another stock 1LE on pump 93. Side note . . . my tuner (Jannetty) told me the stock LT1 doesn't really see any benefit past about E40 anyway. |

Thanks everyone for the advice and reply. I think I will be going for the flex fuel kit. Awesome way of adding more horsepower.

Sensor reads constantly and computer adapts very quickly. I've been running flex for years. Usuallly about e40 locally and straight 93 on long road trips depending on availability and destination.
Small savings on fuel, decent power gain. Really not that expensive if you were going to tune for other mods anyway.
