Track weekend lodging
How do you guys handle lodging for track weekends? The tracks in my area are anywhere from 1-6 hours away, so I won't be going home to sleep in my own bed on a track weekend.
I'd like to see your ideas for different setups to see if I can save a little $$$. -get a hotel or airbnb near the track? -setup a tent at the track and camp? (I've done this before, but it'd be hot in the summer) -Tow your car behind a camper? -Setup an air mattress in your truck bed? Anyone turned their truck bed into a "no-build" overland camper? -sleep on a cot or air mattress under the stars next to your car?

I usually get a room/air bnb near the track. It's easier that way and way cheaper and less hassle than camping or alternatives for me personally.
Less stress > Money. |

Same here I've always gotten a local hotel room or airbnb at a reasonable rate like $100-$150/night. While I do enjoy camping, I need better sleep to focus for or recover from the track day.

I try to AirBnB since I worry about parking at hotels anywhere in the greater DFW area or Houston. Theft or break in is my worry, and with a place that is in a subdivision or at least not in a hotel parking lot, it at least makes me feel better about it.

For the dudes that are using airbnb: are you driving your track car to/from the track? Or do you trailer your car to the track? Do you leave the car/trailer at the track and just take your truck to the airbnb?

If you have some track friends.....
Ive seen quite a few RV rentals. You rent it, the owner delivers it to the paddock in a spot with an electric hookup(you have to reserve from track ahead). Its not cheaper than a hotel or airbnb, but you get an airconditioned/ heated place to sleep in the paddock. |

I tented for a few years. Even just slept in the back of the truck a few times. I now converted a school bus into a RV and use that.

Hotel for me, put key fob in RFID blocking pouch or take the fob apart and remove the coin cell battery to prevent attacks with an antenna while you're sleeping that trick the car into thinking the key fob is present when it isn't. Park near the window of your hotel room with exhaust set to track mode so hopefully you'll wake up if someone breaks in and uses the OBD vulnerability to steal it. Some people have locking OBD port covers and/or relocation kits with a dummy OBD port in the original factory location. Remove the starter relay and/or fuel pump fuse and keep them in your hotel room overnight. Leave the car in gear with the parking brake on. Back up against a tree, pole, or solid structure when you park so that a rogue tow truck can't lift your rear tires and drive away with your car. |
