Thinking of Procharger for daily driving and emissions legal
Hello all,
I purchased a ‘22 1SS as a daily driver, ~7-8k miles a year. I want to put a procharger, and keep it reliable. It will see drag strip no more than 3-4x a year, at most. I don’t plan on taking it to the strip often; however, I would like something to have fun on the streets, hear the whine, etc. I gathered from research that for a reliable, daily street driven SS, a P1x, 6-7 lbs boost, I will hopefully get 550 horses on 91 octane and be safe while being emissions legal. Another question is about getting a flex fuel kit for E85. I know I can run Both 91 and E85. Will I pass with the CA emissions tuned for the flex fuel kit? Obviously, I will have 91 during emission testing. Thanks all and sorry for the noob questions. |

CA emissions testing involves comparing the car's calibration to what they show in the OEM database. If there's a calibration in the car that doesn't match what's in the database, the car will "fail". I've, also, heard that even if you have a CARB calibration, passing could be difficult because CARB and CEPA don't share information (of course - it's CA...), so even though CEPA might have the calibration, if it isn't in CARB's database, that's a complication. yay... There's a chance he could have an E' tune, and reflash to the CARB-Procharger tune at smog time, but there was talk about a flash counter being in the equation some time ago. I don't know whatever happened with that. I heard that it might not be a big deal, but it's something to be cognizant of.

Can you just pop off the belt, flash the stock tune and then pass smog? Then change everything back?

Isn't there also a visual check in CA? They'd see the supercharger....

There is he would have to use the kit that's 50 state legal which utilizes the factory air box. The catch with that is the kit is only legal in Cali with the p1sc1. He'll still reach his goal with that if the tune is right.

You probably will on a cooler day on your first pull. With only 91 octane you’ll likely see some timing pull and less power on subsequent pulls, or very hot days.

When I first installed mines it made 565whp but that was on 93. Not sure what it will make on 91 but I'm sure it wouldn't be too far off from that.

Would it be possible to just pop in a spare ECM with the PC tune and then swap back to the other one all year?

That is a route I'm taking, if necessary. I've probably burned 300-tunes to my car, so it'll be interesting (next September) to see what happens. If nothing else, I have a brand new ECM I can use, and resort back to this one when I'm ready.

Unfortunately there isn't much to be done about IAT's other than building a great heat exchange setup. Getting the hot air off the intake will be paramount right next to cooling the air charge as much as possible. Build the car to shed heat and go with a custom air to water intercooler, about the only way to get consistency without relying on ethanol to do the dirty work. As far as getting around CA emissions, I still think tune swapping is the best bet. Procharger has been selling 50 state emissions legal kits for the 6 gens for a while now, I can't see how it wouldn't be recognized. As far as flash counts, burn that bridge when you get there. As was stated, if the flash count burns you, then you won't have a choice but to run a second ECM. What's scary about CA is they have the Smog Gestapo running around with mobile emissions testing units. You could get profiled by a clown car, pulled over, get the 4th amendment beat out of you, and then emissions tested right there on the side of the road while the tow truck waits for his signal. Not sure if they'd tow ya immediately but I can't imagine driving away without a fat fine of some kind.
