Well, yes and (probably) no.

You have no subscription and that used to automatically turn off smart driver even in the past, but GM claims to have discontinued that program since last year anyway (see announcement here).

At the same time, the OnStar hardware is still functional, and nothing prevents GM from continuing to receive and store all your telemetry data. The police likely also remains able to remotely shut off the vehicle via OnStar.

The only way to disable onstar tracking or access is to remove the radio daughter board from the onstar module.

You can try removing just the antennas ..,,it cuts down the signal but not completely. Also it's generally not a good idea to operate a transmitter with the antenna unplugged.

I have a bit of an update on this topic. I was one of the people where the car seemed to turn on the driving tracking feature even though I made SURE it was disabled when I left the dealership.

The next insurance policy renewal, my insurance DOUBLED. I called Allstate who claims they have no idea other than their system was telling them I am a high risk driver all of the sudden. So I shop around and try to switch insurance companies just to find when they do their final "check" all of the sudden I am a high risk driver. No tickets or accidents, how is this possible? Anyhow the insurance company I was trying to quote with advised their data from "LexisNexis" was flagging me as high risk. This is when I realized what Allstate was doing. So I called Allstate and demanded they change all my vehicles to low miles and pleasure vehicles which did drop my rate a little but it was still significantly more than I have paid in the past.

I then took the advice in this thread and others and took action to make LexisNexis delete my data and written proof that I do not allow them to use my data etc etc etc. This process took months. But I can say now, about 12 months later it worked. How do I know?

I just purchased a new daily driver BMW M4 comp and sold my ZL1. When I contacted my insurance company, the rates were even HIGHER! Like to a ridiculous amount, it increased 70% above what my ZL1 was. I decided I don't care if another company charges me the same, I'm leaving Allstate. Welllll Guess what? When I quoted Geico, who previously told me about the LexisNexis Data, they quoted me a policy that was HALF the cost for the M4, of what I was paying with Allstate for the ZL1. So my rates went back to the pre LexisNexis issue with Allstate.

All of this to say why? Because, I took legal action to make it so that LexisNexis had to delete and not share my data. That way Geico couldn't use any data to make the decision other than my driving record.

So for anyone in the same situation. Make sure your trip tracking stuff is off by going into the cars interface itself, not the app on your phone. Then follow to process to have your sent to you, subsequently deleted, and the invoke the right to make it illegal for LexisNexis to share any data they have about you. And in the future, make sure you do NOT consent to any data sharing where LexisNexis is listed, even if not related to cars or driving. Once the process is complete, you can switch insurance companies and get a much better rate. You existing insurance company will likely keep the information it paid for so you're already out of luck there.

^^^^This!! Totally concur with these steps. I had to do it myself. Mine fortunately didn't take months but only weeks and I did this before any rating increases were applied to my insurance but there were definitely negative notations in my LexusNexus data.

I believe it 100%. I can’t 100% prove it, but my insurance doubled shortly after buying this car and I have absolutely no violations for way over seven years. Like I said before, when I found this out, I pulled the fuse hoping it helps. I know others have said that is not the total fix.

General Motors, one of the original automakers named in The New York Times investigation last year, argued just this month that it has the right to sell your driving data because you drive on public roads, and you have no expectation of privacy in public.

And GM is right about that.
Ugh, another reason to hate on the General.

I would argue that the data is being collected in a privately owned vehicle and therefore cannot be collected and shared without the owner's permission.

Agree, kind of like saying "Well I can see your house from space, so I should be fine surveilling you 24/7 and listening in to your conversations with your wife."

You're going to have to take action to have your data deleted from LexisNexis and then once confirmed, switch insurance companies. If you don't, the data they already have will follow you around.

Thanks. I actually opted out of Lexi’s and there’s another one who also was collecting data but I forgot the name. I filed out all the online crap. They all eventually sent me stuff in the mail. I didn’t see anything incriminating but I don’t trust them anyway. I also opted out of GM even though I never hooked up onstar or any of their programs. I am looking into other insurance companies though. They literally doubled my 6 month premium.

Keep in mind if you have a car that can be connected it does the same stuff. GM was just early with connected vehicles and OnStar.

My VW does exactly the same thing and sells the same data GM did.

I don't think I have seen this mentioned before.

I was going through all my settings after the BCM update. I found an interesting "privacy" setting called "Motion Driving Behavior" linked to a MyBrand app, and the app was allowed to access that privacy data.

Does anyone know what this MyBrand app is? I disabled all privacy settings for it.

You can find this in the infotainment menu for Settings, System, Privacy, Types. That's where I saw the Motion privacy settings and disabled it.

I then went back to the Privacy menu and saw "Apps" selection. That brings up a list of vehicles apps and allows you to adjust privacy settings for each. I disabled all privacy permissions for MyBrand.

Passing along word in case this is something you want to disable. It probably isn't a bad idea to browse through all of the settings under the Privacy menu if you haven't done so recently.
