Magnuson coolant reservoir cap stuck
I'm probably going to get flamed for this, but here goes. Was trying to check the coolant level on my supercharger (Magnuson Heartbeat) reservoir and the cap is stuck. I can't push down and twist, or pull or squeeze. Tried applying "extra force" and it made a scary noise, immediately stopped. Anyone else have this problem? Probably just being to cautious. TIA

Did you try tapping on it?

It's a standard hard plastic screw-on cap, not the pushdown type, someone must have tightened it real hard. I'd try an oil filter wrench or a large crescent wrench, very carefully of course.

If it breaks, it's a standard FORD reservoir cap, confirmed by Maggie Tech line. Use some big channel locks with a rag and it should come off. Dorman 52408.

Gabe, owner of GMS and Sponsor here, looks like he just released a coolant bottle kit, in case you need one

A true coolant expansion tank MUST be higher than anything else in the system, it must not only have an unrestricted path from the supercharger but allow an internal chamber for separation of air from the fluid, similar to an Air-Oil separator. Furthermore, you need to have a positive bleed line from the SCHX so any bubbles that have parked themselves in the higher parts of the heat exchanger, can be pulled to the reservoir without passing through the SC bricks. Just adding a fender tank with an o-ring cap and full sealing, does not help bubbles migrate and dissipate... that is the job of a pressure flexible cap. As everything I have shared over the past two years as a member here, I offer my experience for free, based on testing on the track and street from the knowledge of decades as a fluid dynamics Engineer for both Aviation and Marine systems. |

Got the lid off. Holy crap was it tight! And of course it was low, so topped it up and all is right in the world once again.

Today at WOT the coolant resevoir valve from my supercharger openend.
At 125 mph roughly 0.7 gallon coolant splashed out of the hood on my windshield. 16 psi imo. is way too low on these valves. I refilled and bleed the system from air and all fine again. No hose leak or so. https://youtu.be/cQjDq0e5KIs

But the explanation seems true, it somehow went off and some fluid started to boil. Because even with the cap open, filling resevoir entirely and closing it, turning off the pump results to trigger the overpressure valve. The fluid level decreases with pump running and increases again if it stops. The fluid pressure together with slight drainback triggers the overpressure valve. So I used only a half filled resevoir and had no issues until once today. Even on race track it was okay.
