I think the vendor said it was relatively easy.
Seeing valve body replacements videos show it's not TOO bad or anything. I just worry about the check balls.

Update: There is a law firm that has received several calls from people regarding this A10 Transmission issue: They are asking for what information we have. I have guided them to this thread and videos, as well as will be including the recorded call with GM refusing to do the work while basically admitting they are ignoring NHTSA regulation.
Here is the law firm if you wish to call them: Note: While this link is in regards to the A8 Shudder issue, you still need to put in your contact information and state that you are contacting them regarding the A10 Trasmission recall. https://www.cohenmilstein.com/case-s...rs-litigation/ Or you can call them directly like I did: 561-333-3333 Note: Their intake process is from another firm called "Gordon Partners" - This is also noted on their website at the link above

I completed the valve body upgrade install. After I document the experience, I'll share photos, steps and tools - from start to finish.
I'll also include a very easy process for performing a complete transmission flush at room temperature, using only 2 extra quarts beyond system capacity for purging. I couldn't believe my eyes! Even with regular transmission services, full flush at 3,000 miles and 13,000 miles, the fluid wasn't looking its best. Pretty unexpected for such well-maintained intervals. I have good DIY skills but I found this repair is about a 6 out of 10 repair that requires careful attention. Success depends on having the proper tools, maintaining organization during valve body disassembly, and avoiding component damage. Document the process with photos during teardown, proceed methodically and take breaks when needed for the best outcome. Last edited by Roddrz; 04-07-2025 at 11:59 PM. |

In this video, SIU Automotive cover the valve body, oil pump, and auxiliary oil pump overhaul for the popular Ford 10R80 transmission and the GM 10L80.
These components are also roughly the same unit as the GM 10L1000 and the Ford 10R140. In the video, SIU Automotive cover the identification, disassembly of the components, and rebuild of the valve body, pump, and aux pump along with essential measurements. After watching this video, the DIY repair level will be closer to level 3 out of 10. The video is similar but much more complex than the Valve Upgrade Kit. Here are some pictures that focus on the fluid procedure. You will need an E12 and 8mm socket to removed the filter and valve covers, respectively. The thermostat can be removed during the upgrade which facilitates the fluid flush. CTA Tools 7431 ATF Filler Adapter - M6x1.0 Prime the pan with 6 quarts of fluid, start the vehicle, drain and fill 5 quarts, check the level from the fill adapter. The SIU Automotive video and the service instructions provided in the Valve Upgrade Kit by Next Gen Drivetrain illustrates and documents everything needed to repair the valve body.

Could you include the instructions from the kit, too? Sorry - but did you get the $1000 kit, or just the valves they seem to show that are, separately, available?
Regardless - thanks for the info. I found that video last week and have been trying to understand which valve it is, which I, still, haven't figured out from jumping around, lol.

While the steel shift valves are reliable and I'd love them, the $599 cost benefit is limited in Canada, where rebuilt valve bodies are available for $700. My primary concern was resolving the recall issue, which this upgrade kit accomplishes. My tranny is new and the other valves that are in the body are not part of the problem. (Next Gen do print the fix is not 100% but should work because they don't know the condition of your tranny. If you purchase their valve body then 100% guaranteed) Should clutch pack problems develop in the future due to the solenoid aluminium valves causing internal cylinder wear, I can transfer the upgrade kit components to a replacement valve body. Please note that the Next Gen Drivetrain instructions are proprietary information owned by Next Gen, a veteran-owned US company, and I cannot share publicly, in good conscience. You won't need the instructions until you purchase the kit. Last edited by Roddrz; 04-09-2025 at 06:40 PM. Reason: Aluminium not steel valves |

Gotcha on sharing. KUDOS! I am just trying to make sure I'm comfortable with the install is all.
Thanks for the info!

And 2019 ZL1 A10's had RPO code MGL. I couldn't find an exact source for the MGL code but did find this user's explanation. Quote:
MI2 - Transmission, 10-speed automatic (LT1 & SS) MI4 - Transmission, 10-speed automatic (ZL1) I believe this may be how to tell from RPO codes alone, or just follow the productions dates. Idk I just kind of fell into a little rabbit hole looking at RPO codes. I also tried looking further into the 10L60 but it appears the v6 Camaro may have been the only GM product outfitted with the 10L60. Even the 2020+ CT4 had RPO MHU which initially did not specify but supposedly MHU replaces MHS, and MHS was in a TSB for 10L80/L90/L000 for the trucks and big SUV's. Doubt they'd put a L60 in those.

Did you watch the video? Just was curious your thoughts on install. Being as we have our A10s tuned I'm leery of doing anything to it, and this frustrates me that GM has done this as well. |

The truth is, technically - this seems as doable as they claim it is. I've just never tore into a valve body before, and am not excited about doing it. I guess that hasn't stopped me from difficult things in the past, but a $5 tranny, that's working perfectly fine right now, has me a little skittish. I'm only kidding myself though. I know I'll take the chance. I never thought I'd get into half the stuff I have on this car, so what's a valve body rebuild? lol I guess it can't be too much worse than a complete 408 build I did some time ago. I'll watch that video another 10-times, along with a couple others they share. It seems like a very good series to learn from.
