Two part rear view mirror question

2018 2SS 1LE

I am not using/paying for OnStar, buttons are located on the mirror.

I am thinking about getting the WolfBox mirror/3 camera set up. I would use the third camera as a front parking camera.

Any issue disconnecting the OnStar and removing the factory mirror? Yes I could just use their mirror over mirror attachment, but if their kit that replaces the factory mirror works I feel that is better.

I have not checked yet, but I would think OnStar provides a constant power source and maybe I could utilize it instead of having to run power. Anyone know?

Anyone use the WolfBox mirror/camera?

Pros or cons, even if you have not used it?

Thanks

Good questions... I'm interested too. I love your front parking camera idea!

I replaced my ‘16 rear view mirror with the LCD mirror without OnStar buttons, didn’t have an issue.

I don't think there would be any issues with disconnecting OnStar if done properly. But it may not provide enough power for your needs. That's why Gen5DIY taps into a power source in the passenger side footwell, for their radar detector/dash cam power source, as opposed to another power source within the rear view camera area.

Did you keep OnStar plugged in in the footwell area and just unplug it from the mirror?

That is what I was hoping someone has tried.

I know that is why they did it that way on the 19+, but the 16-18 had a different source from what I remember. The harness was not the long one that they have gone to now.

I can't stand the onstar in the mirror. The lights at night are obnoxious.

Just replaced the mirror, I believe I kept OnStar functions through the radio

OP has a 2018, and the Gen5DIY radar/dash cam harness for the 2016-2018 taps into the overhead console. This area was modified in 2019+ cars, which could be why Gen5DIY moved to the pass side footwell for power.

Gen 5 tapped into the AC circuit for my rear view mirror camera upgrade. It is indeed in the pass footwell.
