Break-in recommendations for a brand new GM LSD
So my brand new LSD from GM is supposed to arrive by Wednesday (9-18). I'm curious to see if there is anything I need to do to break it in properly (other than NOT doing hard launches or power shifts).
I heard one person say to change the fluid at the 100 mile mark, then again at the 1,000 mile mark. The shop that's doing the work suggested to change the fluid yearly, along with my engine oil (since retiring, I simply DON'T drive enough to go by mileage), since the cost of a diff fluid change is minimal.

After I had mine installed I was instructed by the GM mechanic to change the diff fluid after 500 miles and then go back to regular intervals

driving in tight circles should force/test the clutches to do their thangthang, if thats what you want. if its private-property with enough space and you already need new rear tires, maybe drift it a bit? Someone fact-check me on this last idea especially!

But I am thrilled to see someone had the immense good sense to grab a Chevy SS with the manual trans! Woulda-shoulda-coulda on that opportunity. What was I thinking and why'd I let that chance pass? Good on ya! Be sure and let me know if you're ever thinking about letting it go.

After the last diff fluid change, I did a bunch of tight figure eights in a large empty parking lot for 5-6 minutes and, then called it done. No groans or strange noises from the diff ever since.

Hello DonM, Break in is just like anything else with metal on metal save for the oil. Drive, mostly, reasonable until you get the first diff fluid changed at approx 500 miles. Use good fluids! I put in Royal Purple Max Gear with a limited slip additive. After that, drive it like you stole it or enjoy it. Whichever happens first, lol!
