E85 Oil analysis, possible fuel leak?
Ever since I heard Justin White mention that some of the LPE big bore pumps are leaking fuel into the oil, I’ve been a little concerned.
So, I had another oil analysis done, and they confirmed that the fuel level in the oil is too high. The flashpoint, converted from Celsius, is 276°F This analysis was done after only 800 miles, but over the course of a year, with a few races on E85 in between. The previous test 2 years ago was even worse at 241°F. My question is: What are other guys seeing on E85, considering the typical washdown from direct injection? I want to see if my results are above average for an E85 setup before I go ahead and pull the high-pressure pump for inspection. Attached are the oil analysis results from last week, along with a comparison from 2023, all in metric.

Yes sir, that seems very low. My recent oil analysis shows a flash point of 430F
with a target flashpoint of 385F or higher. I have the Katech Goliath on Group Buy Sale until tomorrow.... PM me if you wanna swap these out before there is a major problem.

Every pump that I've seen leak into the crankcase has leaked massively. Filling the entire crankcase with fuel over a short period of time.

So I'm clear, this is a pump issue and not an issue specific to E85?
If it's a pump issue, are we talking factory pumps? |

Thanks for the offer, Gabe! I’m still checking the root cause of my issue, so I’m not sure yet, but I appreciate the heads-up on the Group Buy.

Thanks for the input, Mike. In my case the fuel dilution isn’t that extreme, but the flashpoint is definitely lower than it should be. I’m still trying to determine if it’s just from normal DI washdown with E85 or something else.

I heard it was a pump issue on some of the Lingenfelter big bore pumps. Not the factory pump.

I've never seen any issues with the LPE Big Bore pumps leaking when installed correctly and using a cam lobe that is within range of the pumps specs. Keep in mind that LPE had a 1st generation that couldn't take very big fuel lobes but they have had version 2 our for a while now that handles the larger lobes.
Anyhow, as Mike at Katech said, any pump I've seen leak, was leaking A LOT and filled the crank case full of fuel within a mater of minutes. You could have gotten a bad oil analysis. The TBN looks awfully low for an oil with 1300km on it. You could potentially have poor catch can performance or the tune it too rich somewhere adding to the problem. I would check these things and inspect your pump/injectors. Then send out another oil analysis in 500km.

Thanks for the input, guys. It’s the Gen 2 pump with the correct preload and clearance setup, and it’s only on a 32% lobe. A major leak seems unlikely since I’ve been running this pump for years without any issues. If there were a significant leak, it would have shown on the dipstick or caused bigger problems by now.
The TBN does seem a bit off, especially compared to the later sample that was run for more km. I’ll check the things Megahurtz mentioned, and send out another oil analysis in 500km.
