Intake and exhaust questions

New to the forum and I am hopefully getting my 2017 2SS fifty edition this weekend. I believe I'm getting a hell of a car as this one owner seller hardly drove the car, has low miles, and has almost every option on the vehicle including the dual NPP exhaust, and magnetic ride control. I have several questions as to what the original owner was trying to accomplish with the 2 engine "mods" he had installed. He said he installed a Mishimoto cold air intake system and he replaced the exhaust mufflers with a Borla S-type axel back system. Then to keep the warranty valid he said he convinced the guy at the chevy dealership to give him the "chevy" tune so the car didn't run lean with the added CAI. He said he didn't notice hardly any difference in performance but definitely in sound. My question is what exactly is the Borla S-type system doing and what benefits are there for the Mishimoto CAI. If I go back to the stock air cleaner (do not like the looks of the Mishimoto) will the tune be wrong? How about if I just swapped the Mishimoto CAI with the Cold Air Inductions CAI. I like the look of the Cold Air Inductions CAI a lot more. Second question, what if I want to add more performance with a tune. What do I need to do with the exhaust system or intake to gain more HP. Headers? Cat back system? long tube? x-pipe? All these terms are confusing. Someone please help explain. Thanks in advance.

I had no idea Mishimoto made a CAI for the Camaro, can you post a picture of your engine bay with that CAI?

The Borla S-Type axle back system will make the exhaust louder with a different tone. I had a 2017 2SS Fifty edition myself with the Borla S-Type on it. It sounded great and the Fifty edition has factory burbles tuned in, which was not really a thing back when the Camaro's first came out.

The Mishimoto intake isn't doing anything but making a little extra noise. The GM tune was not made for that intake so having it installed by GM may or may not have helped anything. Knowing GM, the changes were probably nothing fuel related anyway. GM can't just change fueling without going through all of the government steps to maintain emissions and fuel economy. The factory fuel trims can handle the fuel changes for that intake.

For a short time, GM sold this intake, rebranded as a GM part for the Camaro along with the GM tune. However, it was not carbon fiber, but Cold Air Inductions was the manufacturer behind the scenes. This is the intake the GM tune was made for.

@2SS Capt, don't know how to attach an image but Mishimoto definitely makes a CAI for the Camaro.

@Megahurtz, what are factory burbles tuned in mean? That link you sent was for a ZL1. The link below is the one I want to exchange in place of the Mishimoto

I would put the stock intake back on and drop a green filter in it. The stock intake is not a restriction at LT1 power levels.

Borla is a really nice, high end system. Definitely keep it if you’re happy with the sound!

Oh heck ya, I’m gonna be psyched with the Borla axle back! No change there. Planning on putting on the different CAI or stock air box and just learning how to drive this thing!

Actually this is the Cold Air Inductions CAI that the GM CAI is based on that was available for 2016-2020 Camaro's with the LT1 engine...

I have the GMP CAI on my 2020 2SS (with the GM tune for the intake)...

Only the GM unit doesn’t have the air flow straighteners, so the tune needs to be different

@2SS Capt Dang that is one clean engine! Beauty! That's what I plan on putting on mine. How do you keep it so clean? What else have you done to yours?

I went and picked up my Camaro and I am really enjoying it. This thing is a beast! I eventually want to install longtube headers and am wondering what else I will need to complete the exhaust system. Right now I have the Borla S-type axle back system with dual mode NPP. I see discussions of headers with x-pipes, high flow cats, etc. and wanting to know what I will need and if I can still use my axle back system that's already on there? ARH and Kooks are too expensive. Looking at the Speed Engineering headers and X pipe kit and they do not offer high flow cats so these can't be used on my existing exhaust? For cat delete only? Looking at the Texas Speed & Performance headers with catted X pipe. Would this system work and still be able to pass emissions and not get a check engine light? Anyone with Speed Engineering or TSP headers care to comment and what else you used to complete the exhaust system. Thanks!
