Video: Rotofab ZL1 Intake IAT Testing on a Road Course

I did some testing of the Roto-Fab vs. stock airbox with a Green Filter. Stephen Fitzgerald Selden has been a proponent of the stock airbox for road course duty for a while. I swapped the Roto-Fab that was on the car and put the stocker back on. The PDR captures Ambient Air Temp and IAT, but doesn't get MAT. You can get all this data in Pi Toolbox with a little work.

Results:

  1. Stocker +10 HP on Average
  2. Roto-Fab +13 F hotter IAT Average
  3. Boost was .7 psi higher with the Roto-Fab, but power was lower due to air density and likely less timing
  4. Ambient temps were close +/-2 degrees on the testing days
  5. Verdict: keeping the stock intake on with the rain deflector removed from the grille

Can you help me understand what is the rain guard is in the Grille?

Also, where in NC are you located?

Don't take those numbers seriously. Take it to the drag strip and change them, you'll have a different outcome where the Rotofab will shine especially on the big end in MPH

The guy performs a legitimate experiment with backed up data and you say don’t take those number seriously? The only thing I don’t take seriously is hood open dyno sessions with these so called aftermarket cold air intakes!

Nice. So someone like myself that just enjoys the car on the mountain roads, stay with the stock box.

The rain guard is a little baffle plate with three plastic clips holding it in place. One is directly behind the driver's head light and the other two clip to the radiator support.

That’s a very interesting test. The data makes sense. I would guess the lower restriction of the Roto-Fab would be more beneficial for drag racing due the shorter run time. I do much more road course events than drag racing and may stick with the stock air box.

Just came across this in a search. Was researching IATs. Glad to know the stock airbox works well.

Cool

I know Scott Weatherford well and his contribution to the ZL1-1LE community is unmatched.

I decided in our Project Shocker testing to use the OEM airbox for our Stage-1 test at Road Atlanta and it proved to be a great performer! I have the base RotoFab and it performs well once I am moving, but with my hood mods and higher boost, could be too restrictive to be using the OEM. However, I do see much higher initial MATs versus Project Shocker until the vehicle starts moving at higher speeds on the track.

Still to date, there is not ONE company making an air intake system with a dyno comparison to the OEM filter where they didn't have the hood closed... so any data shared by dyno use is subject to failed environmental bias.

While just a basic RS, I remember seeing essentially the stock airbox on a Hennessy model with a cutout. I also read somewhere on Overkill’s website that if you could capture air coming up from the lower grill up the liner it helps as well.

With that, I never saw the need for an aftermarket intake (except for the tube) so I cut the bottom up, added some plastic to act as air scoops, and dropped in a green filter with a Velossatech big mouth in the front. And it’s the bottom so who cares what it looks like.

Haven’t had any issues and the performance is definitely there. I took it even a step further and essentially dei gold wrapped everything from the box to the manifold. IAT matches ambient air even after hours of driving.
