Another excessive oil consumption story!!

I have a new to me 2017 Camaro ZL1 6MT which used 6.5 quarts (10W40 Mobil1 Supercar) of oil for 3319 miles I drove it- that's a quart for every 510 miles.. Car has 17552 miles now and I bought it from Carmax and I bought maxcare as well. I took it to Carmax under their 90 day warranty and both time they were like it is normal. I really didn't calculate the amount until recently and now I know it's an issue and may why the previous owner sold it to Carmax. I drive it most of the time around 2 to 4k RPM and haven't taken it to track, drag strip etc. So a mix of city plus spirited in 50% sport 20% track and 30% Touring... Car is 100% stock what I can see.. no clue about internals but I highly doubt it is touched..

I asked a local Chevy dealer and they told me they can do an oil consumption test. The person I talked said they would document the oil levels every 1000 miles. He also said to tow it to the dealership if oil light comes on and don't add oil as they want to document every additions.

Can someone shed some lights on their oil consumption tests and how it went? If they find it is not normal, do they fix it or replace the engine? Any experiences on dealing with Carmax Maxcare?

That is insane consumption! I will assume no leak under the parked car, although it does sound more like a leak.

For comparison, my 2017 2SS consumes very little oil. Car has 58000 mi and is my daily driver. I do the oil changes and always fill to the top hash mark. I check the level before I do the change, and it is STILL at the top hash mark. Therefore, I did not bother with a catch can. But based on other threads I have seen, those who drain oil from catch cans are seeing consumption measured in a few OUNCES, never quarts.

I know.. I had a Mustang GT and it took a quart or less between oil changes..
No leak under the car.

My car has a boosted LT1 with an aftermarket supercharger (10-11 psi of boost), and even that setup behaves just like ctrlz's 2017 2SS, overall loss between oil changes limited to 1 to 2 ounces.

All this is to say your stock LT4 definitely has an issue, this is much, MUCH higher than normal oil consumption. Even if you have no visible leaks (check the oil pan and all lines in the engine bay and under the car for traces of seepage, the leak may be slow enough not to soil your driveway/garage floor or only intensify above a certain oil pressure). If still nothing, then I'm out of ideas, you probably need professional troubleshooting from a reputable mechanic or shop.

I am wondering if they had a catch can on it and took it off and hooked it up wrong. I can't see it using a quart every 500 miles if it did you would look like a fog machine going down the road. Is it leaking under the car, it has to be going somewhere. Is it in the cooling system.

Is there any smoke from the exhaust? When you said you drive it around at 3000-4000 rpm most of the time, does that mean you're holding it in a low gear and cruising at 4000 rpm? If so, why on earth would you do this? That would use more oil but still I don't think that much.

There could be a lot of reasons for using oil, most of them which are not good. But with that much oil, if its not leaking out onto the ground, then you gotta be getting smoke from the tail pipes. Does it smoke on start up? Does it smoke at WOT?

2020 2SS here, granted, only 11,000 miles but uses absolutely no oil between oil changes... My Hyundai's use practically no oil between 3,000 mile oil changes... A quart every 500 miles??? That is worse than the damn POS 2002 Dodge Grand Caravan I bought my wife brand new (first and LAST Dodge I will EVER own), at 60,000 miles it was going through a quart about every 700 miles and Dodge tried to tell me that's normal... Happiest day was getting ride of that POS...

Something is up, very likely old owner knew something was up and why they sold it to CarMax... Nobody sells a cherry to CarMax, CarMax is where you dump your POS before it costs you more money...

Tailpipes or on the ground, that much consumption should have gotten attention one or both of those ways. How's the coolant look?

Thank you, taking it in soon for the official consumption test!

It doesn't have smoke coming out like crazy, on start up it smokes and then goes away, I am assuming that's water in the pipes..

If I drive around the city or in the mountains, I keep it in lower gear (2-3). Most of my driving is that. On highways I put it in 5th and cruise..

It smokes on start up a bit and then it goes away.. nothing crazy.. I'll post a video later..
I have to check on WOT, need to ask my friend who has a CT5V to get me a video..

Is this blue, smelly smoke from oil, or water vapor (which is normal)?
Blue smoke at startup could be a bad valve seal with oil leakage into the combustion chamber.
Also, not sure why you are highway cruising in 5th gear when you have #6. That's just wasting fuel and wearing the engine.
