Still Too Quiet
Sup guys,
I've had the Corsa Variable axleback for a couple years now. Cold starts are very loud, but after that, cars pretty quiet once warmed up giving off a numbing feeling unless you WOT. But, WOT is just unnecessary 98% of the time. When your cruising around town using the paddle shifts, there just isn't a lot of volume. I have to turn my music off and pull down the rear seats just to hear some noise. If I open the windows, all I hear is the air swooshing by. I've even pulled fuse 51 out. Any suggestions on how to get more noise? I dont want to do headers as it risks failing smog in Arizona. Will an Xpipe add any more volume? Replacing secondary cats with something more hiflow? These cars just sound awfully quiet compared to anything I've ever owned. They should just call it a Cadillac and not a muscle/sports car. |

The only way you will get any more volume from your exhaust would be a secondary cat delete. The factory exhaust already has an xpipe.

I've never had your exhaust. I installed Borla axle back and converted it to quad tips. Sound tube delete along with K&N CAI. My sounds great. Chevy dealer said at start up thought it was a Vette. Don't have to stomp on it to hear it, but, it is not so loud that you cannot talk next to car.

It might be that AFM putting your car into V4 mode is disappointing you. No matter what you do to your exhaust, once it goes V4, all great exhaust notes go to hell.
If this is the case, get a Range device to disable it and go V8 all the time. |

To be fair, I did full exhaust, Headers, X-Pipe, !secondary cats, high flow cats, full pipes from the xpipe all the way to the tips, Borla ATAK and E85 tune. My car is audible but it's not what I consider obnoxious or loud unless you get on it. Cold starts are enough to make it's presence known throughout the block but when it warms up its pretty tame unless you get on it. My 99 Z28 has all those mods + a Cam minus E85 and it's considerably louder. Both cars are about equally as quick but the 99 is getting super charged as we speak.

Something interesting that I've noticed about these cars, or more to the point, the engines. Need4Camaro kinda hits on it too with his 4th gen. The volume they put out seems contradictory to what I've known on other engines through my career as a hot rodder. My AWE touring system, at lower cruising RPMs, is enough for me, but quite frankly isn't really all that loud. Little more than the fuse-pull NPP, but nothing crazy. Now, at WOT, it's one the loudest exhaust systems that I've ever heard, short of straight pipes. For what it's worth, even the open NPP is pretty loud at WOT, but sounds like nothing at idle or low RPM. I've had two LT1 engines, heard a bunch, LT4's, etc., and my buddy has a 6.2 Silverado (nor sure the engine designation), and he says the same thing. The volume delivery feels....strange. I've had countless small blocks, with everything from stock to straight pipe, and the volume is much more predictable. WOT is always louder than idle of course, but a loud system is always loud, and a quiet stock muffler is always quiet.
To the OP, have you looked into a straight pipe system? I haven't heard the Corsa in person, but can't imagine it's not loud. Maybe not loud "enough" for ya, but at some point, without headers, it just doesn't get "louder". |

TBH I don't mind it not being obnoxious. Causes less trouble and the audio goes more in line with how powerful the car really is (I mean who wants an obnoxiously loud car that gets smoked by a Hellcat with a stock exhaust?)

I guess the OP needs to know what Obnoxiously loud actually sounds like.
At idle: Running down the strip This is with Primary and Secondary Cat Deletes.

@FlukeSS
Haha, way to rub it in. Nice sounding Camaro you got there and nice run. I wouldn't mind that noise level, but I know that falls outside the bonds of the law. Unfortunately. @RIPWS6 Yes, I dislike the V4 mode..kills the sound..and annoying because it kicks on and off too often. But 34+ mpg for a V8 is an engineering marvel. Does disabling the DoD with range device cause any premature failure on the 4 lifters vs removing them mechanically? @Need4Camaro//Abubaca Yes, coming from a 4th gen WS6...these new LT engines are definitely more quiet..but have more CI? It's almost like the ECU intervenes or something electronic. I just can't stand it anymore, it needs more noise. I've recorded th dBs with the corsa axleback: Cold starts are a whopping 104.7. But after warmed up, it's a measly 66.3 dBs. WOT warmed up is 89.1 dBs. Average was 74 moving through town. @Everyone Secondary cat deletes are illegal. Federally you can't remove or move emissions equipment. But you can replace them with an approved performance component if that makes sense. At least, that's what I've read. But, I keep reading hearing about this mod, I mean, how would someone do this and pass inspection for Arizona/Texas? They're not bolt on, they have to be cut and rewelded back on. |

You can research the forum on the pros versus the cons, but overwhelmingly people agree that it’s better for your engine. |

I have the Corsa variable with the Corsa 14788 X pipe (secondary cats deleted) and while it screams at WOT, it's honestly still tame when cruising. I think it's just the superior drone cancellation technology doing its job. I had a Stainless Works Legend axle back and that was a really deep sounding exhaust. You could really hear it when you were just cruising around.
I agree that this car is oddly quiet at cruising RPM with most exhaust systems, and then it's ear-piercing at higher throttle inputs and cold starts. Amazing that something can be so quiet, yet so loud. I hate to say it, but I prefer my buddy's Mustang in that "98% of the time" situation where you're just cruising. |
