Remote Start Not Working

Hi All. I am having remote start issues. Normally it works fine from even 100-150 ft or so. But lately it won’t even do it from 3 feet. I have read abunch of other forums and most of them are all about it be inconsistent but that is not my case. It just won’t work. The only thing I could thing of is that it flashed my fob battery was low so i stopped bought a new one and put it in. I swear it started remotely after the fob change but I’m not 100% sure. I have read the manual and checked that i have no emissions codes or anything. Any thoughts? Could the brand new battery in my fob be the cause? Could it be something else?

If your sure there’s no engine light, hood is closed, coolant levels are good, you could use Onstar’s app on your phone to remote start. If it works then it’s your fob/battery. If it doesnt, I’d head to the dealer.
If you aren’t subscribed to the service with Onstar, you’d have to weigh out the cost to subscribe vs a dealership diagnostic.

When you put the new battery in, did you sit the fob in the cupholder for a little bit? I forget exactly which one but its basically how you start the car if the battery is dead and how you reset a key. Last time I changed my battery, I sat it in the cupholder and remote started it while it was in there, then drove to my destination and it worked fine from then on.

Does this hold true for non remote key fobs as well? I put a new battery in my car and the remote fob, and I keep getting messages saying it cannot detect the remote, and sometimes the car will not shut off after I hit the button on the dash.

You know you can only remote start it twice and then you have to get in it and start it right?

I have not tried setting the key in the cup holder. Do you mean that for battery as in car battery or fob battery. I only changed the fob battery not the car one. And yes i am aware that it won’t work after 2 in row… this is a week long problem now and i manual start my car everytime. The only time i try to remote start is when Im inside and its been sitting all night.

As far as I know, every car that has doors that you can unlock with the button on the handle because of fob proximity need to do this if the battery is dead. I did have an older Malibu where they told me there was still a chip in the key so it had to be recognized by the car again when they cut me new ones.

Assuming like you said you scanned the car and there are no codes. Might just be related to your key fob.

How far away from the car can you unlock it? If not far at all, I would suspect you need to replace the battery in the fob as the new also is weak. Or the fob itself is having transmitting issues which may mean the fob itself needs to be replaced.

I can unlock and lock the all the way from my bedroom which is where I normally remote start it so 100-150 ft away. Yesterday I took out the battery and put it back in and got the car to remote start easily from my room. The next morning it wouldn’t do it from my room but when i got right beside the car it did. And now it is not working at all again. Thinking is must be the fob. I have a fob from my old camaro that I might try to relearn to the car tmr to see if it will work.
