Roto Fab

I picked up used Roto Fab with oiled filter, looks in overall good shape, but I do not like anything oiled. Is oiled filter better than dry for these Roto Fabs? If not, Roto website is a little confusing, trying to buy dry replacement.

There is no significant performance (flow) difference between their oiled and dry filter elements. I've had both and also prefer the dry one.

That's what I thought, I'll swap to a dry one. Got a part number by any chance? Their website is rather confusing, I believe I found the correct one off another website but would be nice to confirm.

Roto-Fab sells a "regular" and a "big gulp" model of their intake for the ZL1. I'm 99% sure the filter elements are the same for both, given that even the "regular" filter element uses practically all the available room, only the intake pipe diameter is different between their two intake products.

The replacement dry filter element is sold under part number 1013-5014, see here.

As stated no significant difference in performance on a stock vehicle but oiled can be serviced forever. That makes oiled superior in my opinion. I would also say there is a point where oiled likely DOES flow more than dry since the Big Gulp which is designed for high HP applications only comes with an oiled filter. For stock applications though, the standard Rotofab comes with both filter options since both flow more than enough air for a stock engine.

Speaking of more airflow, I was watching a YouTube video of the JLT Intake install on a Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing. I was surprised to see that the BW stock air box has a second opening in addition to the usual snorkel opening.

Might explain where the extra 18 HP comes from in the Blackwing LT4.

Of interest, the Whipple install instructions has making an opening:

Calloway cuts a big opening in the bottom of the OEM airbox as a part of its ZL1 SC750 package.

When I had my ZL1, I experimented with cutting the bottom of the airbox out. Got more supercharger whine for sure but also got higher IATs at idle from sucking in hot engine air.

https://www.camaro6.com/forums/showthread.php?t=541269

Unfortunately, there's not enough material on the fender side of the ZL1 air box to make an opening like there is with the BW.

Big gulp for C7 Z06 comes with a dry filter, while the one in my ZL1 came with an oiled filter

I preferred cleaning over replacement with my choice.

Maybe the C7 Z06 has more filter area, if not then I don't know but there's just no way a dry filter is going to flow as much air as oiled cotton assuming everything else is equal.

FWIW I had oil residue in the intake pipe section between the filter and the MAF with a brand new oiled filter after 2-3000 miles, so I'll stick to the dry one for the time being. Last thing I want to see from an intake is oil contamination on the MAF.

Had my oiled filter on my car since the car had 400 miles on it, now at 12K miles, no oil residue in my intake pipe section. There should never be any oil residue if oiled properly. I've never heard of one doing that when it was purchased new, I have seen people that serviced an oiled filter themselves and used WAY too much oil that caused that issue. This is an old wives tale that has circulated the internet for decades now. If this were a known issue then none of these companies would be in business selling them and none of the tuners/shops would be using them in their builds.
