The video explains the reason for the dual specification as well as why there are new recommendations. The cliff notes is that it costs a lot of money to get oils certified by the EPA and 5W-30 was the first oil certified. 0W-40 was the next oil certified and the recommendation by the engineers. This timeline means it was likely their recommendation several years prior to being added to the manual, but that's how the business and certifications work. I also feel the new recommendations are in response to some known issues - such as AFM lifters and oil sludge buildup on the intake valves.

Wrong, it specifically discusses the oil for the LT1 which is the standard V8 engine in the Camaro. Dexos1 5w-30 is fine for cars that are not tracked according to the '23 manual, here it is...

You are 100% correct. That paragraph right there says all I need to know. I don't track my car but still choose to go with the SuperCar 0-40.

I'm thinking about doing a 50/50 mix of 0W-40 and xW-50 for my next oil change to get some extra engine protection on track (especially for occasional 100 treadwear 3R tire use) while still retaining better cold start properties and less likelihood of catalytic converter poisoning compared to using xW-50 oil.

DEXOS approved means it’s safe for the converters no matter the weight. The weight is what “creates” the premature wear depending on climate ergo 0-40 will always be recommended. If you live and start your car in a warm climate year-round I don’t think it matters. Gm is always trying to cover their ass. Next time you start your car time how long it takes to get maximum oil pressure with the two different weight oils.

Did you get this analysis?

It is 2025 this thread is pretty dated due to new oil formulations.

https://www.amazon.com/Mobil-Superca...07MXPNH7S?th=1

The Supercar 0w-40 is Dexos approved.

The Dexos part is mostly due to "pre ignition on DI cars". I dont think it has much to do with catalytic convertor poisoning at all. I did my research off that tag.

These two vids are a good place to start. Sorry I forgot how to embed Youtubes on here. I really like Lake speeds vids.

I am out of warranty so I went with Mobil one 5w50 Supercar. I went with this over 0w40 due to 40 shearing back to 30 weight pretty quick. Sucks because I use the Euro 0w-40 in my Jeep and Subaru cars too.
