At the same time, let's not forget that Bill Wise was shifting the ZL1 1LE himself, and although he did it like a champ, the A10 would easily beat him by several seconds. So the 6th gen Camaro, still on the Alpha chassis, could get very close to the GTD's time with some easily obtained extra horsepower. Alas, GM never took the automatic to the Nürburgring, and of course they never bothered to improve the LT4 in the 10 years of its production, so we will probably never know.

Up until this the 2016 Viper was the fastest "American" car around the ring.

Now I want to point out I still think the ZLE is the better value. 77k versus 100k

Also saw someone above point out the Mustang GTD was faster than the C8Z Z06. That z06 time was not set by GM. So I personally don’t count it. I think it has more in it but I was reading it hits a wall in 5th gear so I could be wrong.

That Viper to this day is super nasty! C7 ZR1 did a 7:04 I would personally take C7 ZR1 over the C8 but I have been know to be silly like that

This is no more a Mustang than the Mach E is a Mustang. In name and some key styling cues only. Remember when they first showed it at Pebble Beach (if memory serves) it was mid engine.
It's a race car developed by Multimatic Motorsports. The article I read was Ford did the styling and aerodynamics. Still an awesome time, but when they say "American" remember that Multimatic is a Canadian company.

Yup. Good one. There are some folks at Porsche and Lucid who would like to have a chat. Maybe fastest affordable EV. And even that is questionable, depending on how you define affordable.

Not anymore. A Xiaomi SU7 just ran a 6:46 blowing away the Mustang.

For GM to invest the amount it would take for an all new ICE Camaro that actually had broad appeal would not be a money making proposition. Look at Mustang sales this year. Almost down to Corvette levels. Even the Mustang is dying. Coupes just aren't selling. So, it has little to do with EV support or emissions/FE rules. GM won't go back into the segment unless it's a for sure money maker. Now as for what Trump will do. He isn't rolling back emissions/FE to 1987. What he may do is real in the aggressive targets set in the out years that are driving EVs. Remember the government is NOT mandating EVs, simply ZEVs. The bigger issue will be a) can he overrule a state's rights to set emissions targets, which he attempted first time around and b) do you really want to leave the US Auto industry in the dust on purpose so they can't compete anywhere in the world as they will slow EV development. Remember this, the TOP TWO GM cars currently sold in Mexico? They are both built in China. Trump is smart and he will be wanting to keep China in check more than he is worried about emissions/FE. He will want US OEMs to thrive at China's expense. But setting us up to fail in 10 years when China will have a thriving EV business around the world, our only defense will be tariffs. And by the way, China has the easy out of doing what the Japanese did 30 years agon and the Koreans did 15 years ago.......build their plants here. BYD is currently building a plant in Mexico and Europe to combat tariffs. And if you do some research on BYD (owned by Warren Buffet) you will see some very good automobiles. All the Chinese cars lack right now is ride and handling. And that can be learned. And if Trump REALLY wants to make a splash, find the carrot that gets Apple to build it's products here instead of LWCs like China and now India (yes Apple is moving some production to India now)
