A Mustang GTD equivalent from GM would never be a Camaro anyway. It would be a Corvette.

Ford has more leeway because Mustang is their only performance model outside the occasional return of the Ford GT. Ford can throw a lot more performance models under the Mustang name.

GM has/had Camaro and Corvette. GM won't make a $300K Camaro because Camaro always has a ceiling on it with Corvette above it. A super decked out race car Chevy would fall under the Corvette umbrella due to that.

The GTD Corvette already exists and outperforms the Mustang on track at most races.

I don't see its Nürburgring lap time anywhere, though.

If that car hits under 7 minutes...

I think the point Arpad was making was that it was nice to see a manufacturer pump money and development resources into their muscle car…

Now I give credit where credit is due, the new maxi-vette will be nasty, but the Muscle was always the redheaded stepchild.

On that note, A person at work drove in a 1LE today. Need to find them, no idea who it was

From what I've been told by a retired GM employee, they won't make an ICE Camaro because of Biden's new CAFE rules. The Corvette gobbles up all the credits so they can't make both (and still sell ICE trucks). The only hope is if Trump kills the new rule, which I'm really hoping he does.

GM’s decision to drop the Camaro happened during the Trump administration and had nothing to do with who was in office. I was still in GM Product Planning when the discussions started, though not when the final decision was made.

I get every name plate needs to constantly justify itself, etc but it does feel like GM went, “ well we screwed up with the 6th gen and sales are not what we expected, so kill it instead of fixing it for the 7th gen”.

Not that I hated my 6th gen. I loved it and how it turned out is why I bought it where I would not have bought a 5th gen. But obviously we are the minority and it was too focused on being a great performance vehicle at the expense of practicality. But with the Cadillac’s marching on, a 7th gen couldn’t have been that more expensive to do since it was on an updated version of Alpha. Or was Alpha II not able to fix the flaws?

The 6gen ZL1-1LE will always be the peak of Camaro, no one can take that away!

And to bitchslap all the other MFGs they made a ZL1 Convertible with a TR6060!

It will go down in history as the best performing car of its time.

It was never on Alpha II. That’s the part that happened when I was still there. The decision was to extend with an additional MCE instead of migrating to Alpha II with CT4 / CT5.

Interesting.

Did GM determine at the time the market was in general decline vs the lackluster sales being due to the smallish trunk, backseat, and low outward visibility? Ultimately they would have been right as the market has continued to decline.

In a way, guess it isn't too surprising. Ford did the same thing with the S650 being just a heavily refreshed S550. Though I doubt a 2nd MCE to the Camaro would have brought a massaged LT1 where Ford brought more power to the S650.

Other than the upgraded electrical architecture, is Alpha II much different overall? How long do you think the Caddy sedans can continue on?

I just purchased my first CPO CT5 Sport and we're thrilled with it. It compliments our HW convertible and Panther RS nicely.
