Whats the best handheld Tuner?

The best hand held tuner for a canned tune and options for more detailed tune?

To be honest, I would not recommend going with a canned tune. I would either have it dyno tuned or remote tuned by a company like GPI (Gwatney Performance).

That would require an HPTuners MPVI3. An AEM 30-0334 Wideband would also be very useful for remote tuning.

Here is a link to GPI's website listing for remote tuning: https://gwatneyperformance.com/produ...udes-hardware/

That package comes with the HPTuners device and you can opt for an AEM wideband as well, but I'm not sure if it is 100% necessary for simple bolt-ons.

The HPTunes software is 100% free (you will need a windows laptop), but in order to actually load a tune / calibration on to the car, you must pay license the car to YOUR HPTuners MPVI device. You buy credits through the HPTuners webiste and then sync them to YOUR device, and then you can license your vehicle's ecu

If you ever lose your device or just want to use someone else's, you will have to license it again, which will cost more credits.

I remember I had one of those old Vinci handhelds for my old 98 z28 back in the day. The performance tune jacked up a4 line pressure and it would make the tires chirp after a shift. Bahahahahaha where's my mullet!

Yep- those guys are right. The way to go is HPT and a local pro tuner is best.

BUT, if you're like me living in a car modification/tuning desert (I still gotta drive 240miles round trip for E85), I would humbly suggest something like a BDX (aka- Bully Dog) handheld for lower tech tuning.
If purchased from a vendor with tuning ability, you can describe the changes/mods or issues your car has and they can often load a canned tune that can get you on your way. Tech support available for those of us that are computer challenged. They're at www.bullydog.com.

They say the Diablo tuner is good for about 20 more HP and Tq. Saves your factory tune so you can always reload it back to stock.

That, for the record, doesn't matter from a warranty perspective, once you changed the stock calibration, the warranty is gone whether or not you reload the stock setup and you might as well invest in a proper tune.

It is true that a handheld is less cumbersome to work with than a notebook or laptop with HP Tuners or even a bigger scan tool, but messing with the cables is the worst part either way, at least to me.

Plus it's not like you'd want to change things every week, once you have a near optimal tune for your hardware, wouldn't you stick with it until the next upgrade? If yes, again, might as well go with HP Tuners that almost everyone uses on this platform.

You won't get a 20whp gain on this platform in stock form from tuning alone. Add flex fuel and tune, sure.

Is there a basic universal Flex Fuel tune available anywhere, everything stock with the ethanol sensor being only real mod?

I have 73k miles and 7 years. My warranty is long gone.

I don’t think so.

So back in 2019 I used a Diablosport intune to tune my Camaro with a custom tune from "*******" Tune. I'm not that savvy with this tuning stuff but it was actually user friendly and easy, along with good phone support.

After sending him the logs, Lew emailed me a custom tune that disabled the AFM, turned up the throttle boost and raised the other engine parameters. The difference was like night and day. I felt more power through all the A8 gears and there was and still is ZERO throttle lag when I step on the petal. Almost six years later and still going strong. No ignition issues and has not thrown any codes.

I do know years ago on this forum when I mentioned the Diablosport it was not thought very highly of. Before the Camaro I used the same unit to tune the Hemi in my 2012 Jeep GC. The difference in the Jeep was downright amazing. It felt like a different vehicle. Probably because the Hemifever custom tune in the 2012 jeep also tuned the transmission as well as the engine. I replaced the Jeep with a 2018 Macan GTS, daily driver, as a retirement present. And now have the best of both worlds...
