I'd wager the 10L80/10L90 is the best auto transmission GM has ever manufactured.

![]() 10L90 is not the same but is very big dimensionally so it’s a shame that it didn’t make it into any other platform. But even in the 755 HP C7 ZR1 they used the A8.

There are differences like bellhousing, shift logic, etc. Also, the 10R80 has been prone to rough gear shifts that GM owners don't experience.

At the end of the day it’s completely different than the 10L90 and torque capacity is less. FYI the 10R80 in my wife’s Mustang shifts perfectly fine. And if you think GM owners never experience rough shifts in their transmissions I have a bridge to sell you.

It is well known that the 10R80 is notorious for rough shifting. Any quick search online will result in dozen of complaints. Goes for almost all models with that transmission. I never said GM owners don't experience rough shifts, but we're talking about the 10L80/10L90, and the number of complaints are literally a fraction of that of the 10R80. ![]()

Ford designed the 10L80/10L90 and GM designed a 9-speed transverse unit as part of a collaboration in the early 2010s. The original deal was that both companies would share and use each other's work. Ford ended up never using the 9Txx that GM designed, while Ford and GM both used the 10-speed unit, with different software strategies.

test drove the A8 when I purchased my 2016 and chose the manual over the auto on that purchase and I'm glad I did due to the shutter issues but I chose the A10 for my 24 and having tracked for a season I can tell you it has never been in the wrong gear. The only draw back I can see is what a PITA changing the fluid is going to be.
