Buying a car with a replaced engine (dealer installed under warranty)

I am looking to buy another 2018 1LE. I have had several cars (///M cars) since I sold my 2018 and want another. I found a nice one with all of the service records with 19k on the clock. This car currently had LT's, CAI and a tune from Tampa Tune. The engine was replaces at 11k and the last owner has had the car from about 7800 miles. So the New replaced engine has technically 8k on it.

Please comment of reasons for or against.

I tried searching and did not find much in the way of opinions.

I had my engine replaced IIRC around 10k. Spun rod bearing. It sucked BUT I chose the Camaro because unlike many manufacturers, they honor the warranty even when failure occurs on track.

I'm now at 22K miles. The car runs great and I'm not easy on her. Of course, I perform frequent fluid changes.

In short, I wouldn't dismiss a car solely because of a new engine provided everything else is in order.

Thank you for your perspective. Did GM offer an additional warranty on the new engine?

IF you said that correctly and the car with the replaced engine is now tuned, whatever powertrain warranty was there is gone. Tune is a universal warranty forfeiture. If you're comfortable with it otherwise, go for it. (just because you asked about an additional warranty on the other guys new engine).

100% know and agree with you. You can never have piece of mind when buying a used car.

I'm still on the fence...

I wouldn't mind an engine that is newer than the chassis, which means improved life expectancy, especially if it was broken in properly. However, it does reduce resale value, which should work in your favor now (but not when you sell the car later).

I was between two 1LE’s; one white, the other blue. Practically identical with the service history differing.

Blue had an engine replacement at 10k miles.

White had a lifter fail at 10k miles.

Initially put off by the engine I went with the white, although in my situation I was looking only at stock and in warranty cars. In the end I think I made the right decision as the white car ended up having CPO warranty

Depends on the price.

No special warranty on replacement engine.

I called the dealer that did the replacement and they said that it comes with a 3yr/100k mile warranty. As stated above this is really inconsequential as it has been modified and tuned. I guess it could be put back to stock and perhaps would be fine?

I think I am going to look for a different car altogether. I think an LS3 might provide more piece of mind (C6 grand sport), this might be where I go.

Thank you all for your thoughts.

They can supposedly see its tuned and how many times, it's no longer possible to put the OE tune back in it, undetected.

Yep, this is exactly what I was thinking. This is just my personal opinion, but there are so many used cars to choose from, and with good shipping options a person can get a car from anywhere in the country with ease. With that in mind, why get one with any possible issues or concerns? The only reason is if it's SIGNIFICANTLY less expensive than a clean/pristine version. If you're willing to do a little shopping, it's extremely realistic to get one with the miles you want, no wreck/damage history, no unusual mechanical history, etc. Why settle for anything less?
