We need new, better technology to make ic engines run cleaner. I've heard that ic engines get like half the energy out of the fuel they burn, the rest goes out the exhaust.I remember 30 years ago when ceramic high temperature ic engines were hopefull.

There are attempts, Porsche just patented a 6-stroke engine that has an extra compression and an extra power stroke to reuse a good chunk of the wasted energy in exhaust gases, but these new designs typically don't survive the brutality of the real world.

The traditional, piston-based 4-stroke engine has fended off every attempt so far, even though 35-40% efficiency is the best it can do. To be honest, improving that to a significant degree (say, to something like 75-80%) is borderline impossible at this point, after 110+ years of development.

Last time I'll be replying to you.

People like you make me laugh. So you have never smoked pot in your life you don't go over the speed limit. You don't break any laws correct mister high and mighty. No on thinks you are Jesus but man you are sure talking like it. Just funny to me you are like one of those preachers that is cheating on his wife with every attractive women in the church it's not ok for you to break the law but when I do it it's OK. Get off your high horse and stop acting like you are perfect people like you are the reason the is a stigma on every single engineer in this world. But it's cool I get it your an engineer you know everything lol just remember next time you are driving 61 in a 60 that you are breaking a law.

Have you ever broken the speed limit?

the only way they can use that 6 stroke engine after 2035 is if it's on an e fuel.

that engine looks to me like a bunch of detroit diesels gang banged a family of swiss watches.

Diesel is capable of over 50% efficiency. I think internal combustion could get much higher efficiency averages. But you'll never see it with current emissions standards. Diesel does belch some nasty emissions, but there are bio fuel options that could reduce or eliminate that. Greed is societies true enemy. We could, in theory, clean up a ton of our emissions with bio fuels alone, but that would not be profitable to big oil and everyone down the line, and big oil controls everything. You'd also need a massive dedication to hydroponics and clean energy to grow bio fuel on the supply scale you'd need, to meet demand. It's just not going to happen in this economic climate. They have all but destroyed our currency, and the financial vacuum over the U.S. makes private innovation next to impossible.

My buddies '19 Duramax 2500 is deleted & tuned, gets 22-24mpg city and 28+ on highway trips, full load of kids & gear. I think he said he gets about 15-17 towing his 28' toy hauler with 4 seater RZR & gear. The prior year before he did his delete, the truck was in and out of the dealership with check engine lights and problems every 3-4 months, always at the place for 2-4 weeks at a time. He just wanted to sell it by the end. His truck isn't even capable of "rolling coal," not that it was ever his goal. Truck hasn't skipped a beat since. No CEL's, no mechanical issues. Sold my '13 F350 for the same reason. Started getting codes all the time, frequent visits to the dealership, under powered, poor fuel economy. The diesel option in those trucks is like $20,000 up charge now I think. And everything under the hood is expensive. Ended up selling mine once I got it running clean long enough to sell. Went with a newer 7.3 Godzilla. Been very happy with it until recently, have some metal in the oil and it's out for analysis. It gets dogshit fuel economy while towing, 5-8mpg. 13-14mpg unloaded. But that's what you get when you cry about emissions. Vehicles that get piss poor fuel economy and burn 2-3x the fuel, and somehow that amounts to cleaner air. I get half the fuel economy (or worse) than my buddies diesel gets. I wonder whos carbon footprint is bigger? It'll probably get worse if I get an excuse to truck norris cam this Godzilla. I have a feeling the cam/lifters are spalling and that's why I'm seeing metal in the oil. But I have to play the dealers game for warranty purposes.

However, on the bio fuels, it's a big chunk of the reason why I say EPA actions such as what we're seeing today are bullshit witch hunts. There's far bigger fish to fry, and the entire agency is a waste of resources. It lacks human beings of rational thought in positions of authority. I don't know how such unqualified people end up in their positions of authority. I guess it's the Peter Principle. Or perhaps something more corrupt.
