Better off private sale?

This isn't a technical question, just inquiring about anyone else and their experience trying to trade in their ZL1 with modifications. Long story short, found a pristine C6 ZR1 at a local dealer that I've been eyeing, and went through the whole "send me pictures, info etc. of your trade in" text messaging with the dealership. I only have one more year on the car and have been slowly starting to search out a C6 ZR1 as that is one of my all time dream cars. Dealership appraisal got back to me this morning and offered me $40,000.00 . It was obviously waaaaaay too low and I just want to be clear that I'm not trying to recoup any moneys in modifications as I understand that's not how this business works, but damn $40K?! Ok rant over, who has any experience good or otherwise trading or not trading in their ZL1.

They can literally turn around and easily sell this ZL1 to the customer sitting at the next sales desk for $60K without even touching your trade. Wanting a 50% markup for essentially nothing is laughable.

$40k? Yea. They definitely are going to screw you over. I bet Carvana or Carmax would give you more.

Either way, I'd go with a private sale and get another $15k or more out of your car.

I sold mine (stock) a whole back privately but it took months because I literally had nothing but low ballers (people wanting $40k like that dealer) or others that wanted to trade for things I had zero interest in.

I agree with everyone else, $40K is laughable for a 2020 ZL1, I have a 2020 2SS with 10,000 miles in absolutely perfect condition and I'd be hard pressed to accept $40,000 on a trade in or sale (I do have a bunch of upgrades but none that are warranty voiding)...

They are definitely low balling you big time...

Typical dealer trade-in offer. Trying to knock your head off so they can make a huge profit. And to answer your question, yes 1000% you are better off selling it private.

How many miles? I agree $40k is way low for a 2020, but apparently mileage plays in a huge swing. I just got my annual property tax bill and it went from $300 last year to $400 this year. They were saying it's valued at $41k, up from $32k last year. I was going to contest it but looked up pricing on KBB and saw that with 12k miles mine is worth (according to them) around $53k. Reconfigured at 12k/yr which is what the county uses and at $84k miles it came in at around $40k. So I just grimaced and paid it.

Recently went through this with a TRX to Braptor trade...there is no tax advantage to using dealer in my state so I have a tad more leverage, but I just straight up said I didn't mind to peddle that truck on Facebook and come back later, they had also had that bronco for awhile and needed it gone. So I told them to come back with an offer that was close enough to make me want to forego the endless tire kickers, and they actually did. I was kinda of surprised.

Now, your situation is different as you are looking at the king dingaling of cars(love my z but would also make this trade), but might be worth a shot to just be honest with em and tell them to make that deal at least respectable.

That sounds like a stupid offer...

A C6 ZR1 might be the only other car I'd consider replacing mine with. I hear those cars have heat-problems though, which I'm not sure how true they are, and if we're only talking a head exchanger away or something, but I'd slap a 2650 and bigger HE anyways, so... lol.

That dealer sounds like they're one that would mark a new ZR1 up $100K...

Tell them no, tell them what you want for it, be educated on the book value minus your mods but I walked on an otherwise good new car deal on a 21 ZL1. I staying in slinging with them over what I would accept on the 18 1LE that I had at the time, they refused, and I walked.

Once I had my now 23 ZL1 I took that 18 to webuyanycar and left a happy man. I won't parse out did I get top dollar and all that, I had an easy transaction and left with a check for my equity in about 30 minutes.

I'll probably never trade to a dealer again.

Thanks everyone for the input, to answer the question someone asked my ZL1 only had 14,000 miles on it. Was very disappointed by their value, I thought I was just being biased but I knew after doing my research prior to contacting them what number I’d like to be at. Here is their last text too me: I appreciate all your time. I know we aren’t trying to insult you. It’s just not a good fit for us apparently.”

I think their response was actually pretty spot-on. It's probably just not a good fit for them. I'm sure you already know this, but I'd get all the quotes you can possibly get - Carmax, Carvana, givemethevin, etc. You might be surprised at one of these. If nothing else it will arm you with more data. You can then run more accurate numbers to see if the trade tax difference is really a big deal or not.

The KBB “trade in value” was 61-64500. I would have been happy letting them have it for anything with a 6 in front of it and that’s with me having to justify losing my ass on modifications to my wife lollllllll….40k is laughable.
