Class action lawsuit for 2019-2022 Camaro front headlights?

GM have discontinued the original headlights in question and replaced them with a updated design that might address the problem causing the LEDs and DRL to flicker, flash, then die off and not work.

- Part number 84529723 has been discontinued and replaced with "Chevrolet 84756148 Headlamp Assembly, Front"

- Part number 84529722 has been discontinued and replaced with "Chevrolet 84756147 Headlamp Assembly, Front"

This action quietly admits it was an issue but GM never offered a recall or fix for a major safety hazard on the car.

Each headlight is $1900 from GM ($1300 if you buy yourself online), and requires the removal of the front bumper to replace; not a cheap or easy DIY fix. Dealer quotes of $5,075 to replace both.

Has anyone had success in getting GM to replace the lights? Are there any rumblings of a class action law suit?

If not, the first step is to assemble a list of anyone that has had an issue with their DRL/ LED lights going out in the RS version of front headlights for Camaros built around 2019-22. (There are numerous videos of earlier models having a similar problem on Youtube but their assembly is different than 2019, so other years/models and part numbers could be involved)

Please leave a post here if this has affected you!

Alas, this action admits nothing. GM discontinues part numbers as frequently as one changes their underwear. A very significant number of parts built into our Camaros receive at least one new part number throughout the warranty period, and often more than one.

As an example, every time a new (cheaper) supplier is found for a part or a subassembly of a part, a new part number is issued without any public explanation or information.

As long as your car is under bumper-to-bumper warranty, if a headlight fails, it will be replaced for free. Since you already received a dealership quote, I assumed your warranty has already expired, and even though there may be known issues with the headlights, GM will never admit it, nor will they fix it for free out of warranty (there is some leeway a dealership has to apply "goodwill" discount to a repair, but they aren't obligated to).

I agree that this sucks, but I don't think you have any case or legal standing for a class action lawsuit.

I agree with arpad_m, spot on.

Alternatively, are you having problems with the entire headlight assembly or just the DRL's? I've never noticed mine acting funny, but I don't see my DRL's for myself very often.... one would have to be in someone else's rear bumper reflection to see them....

Jokes aside, I had a problem with a set of Morimoto LED headlights for my '18 F150. Absolutely love their headlights, they make a really nice set for the '16-'18 Camaro, too. The DRL on my passenger assembly would flicker when I would use the turn signal. After chasing the usual suspects to no avail, I called up the outfit I bought the lights from. Of course I was well out of warranty for the lights, but the guy was really cool about it, he said the LED's rarely fail, they have a long life these days, but the controller boards are cheap and they've had some fail right away. Customers send their whole headlight back for warranty replacement, and they will swap the bad boards out and put the repaired light up for sale as an open box. I paid the shipping but dude sent a replacement board for free and I followed his instruction on replacing it. Wasn't that bad.

I wonder if you're having DRL issues if you don't just need a new DRL board. If that's the case, there are some aftermarket options much cheaper than replacing the entire assembly, that could be worth a try. Oracle Lights makes replacement DRL boards that allows you to color shift the factory DRL's via remote. Among other modifications that would need to be made to keep your DRL's on while parked, could be pretty cool mod as an added touch for a cars & coffee or car shows if you're into that kind of event. Otherwise, no reason you can't just keep them white and treat it as a repair. For ~$200, it might be worth a try.

Short of chinese knock offs, the only cheap way to get a replacement will be to make friends with wrecking yard folks, stay in touch with LKQ, and hunt ebay for parts cars.
