Nurburgring Lap Time if the ZLE had carbon ceramics?
As a bit of a thought experiment/discussion I was curious what people think about this. The corvette z06/z07 package had carbon ceramic brakes, the z/28 had carbon ceramic brakes, yet the zl1 1le never got the option.
The zl1 1le in manual did a nurburgring time of 7:16.04 with the standard iron rotors. Assuming the carbon ceramics would save maybe 100lbs off the weight of the car and also save in rotational mass & inertia, how much time do you think would be shaved off if any? |

I think it would be more like 40-50 lbs, but certainly the unsprung weight reduction and additional braking power would most likely make a difference but I dont think it would be anything big.
If they were serious about setting a great time they would have used a professional driver. No knocks on the engineer, he ran the car pretty hard around the track but rumors are that Oppenheiser ran a 7:08 in it after the 7:16 run before packing it up. I suspect that although the were marketing that GM was "unleashing the camaro team" they were really still on a leash and did not want to openly demonstrate a solid beat down on the Corvette, which it clearly would have.

I just don't see another 8 seconds in the car using that configuration, no matter the driver. The aero held it back a lot in the back straight, it could barely get up to 170 mph, and Bill Wise was almost bored flooring it and just willing the car to go faster there... he drove flat out everywhere, the tires sounded as being on the brink of breaking traction in every corner, he even had to correct a few times in the first few.
1-2 seconds faster with a professional driver, maybe, but 8... the car was a bigger bottleneck IMO. If we can even say the word "bottleneck" after such an astoundingly great lap time, that is.

Maybe its true, maybe not. Didn't the 2018 AMG GT-R run a 7:10 at the same weight, with DSSV's and 70 less HP?
