23 A10 transmission Failure 20k miles
Whining noise at low speeds after car warms up but can also be heard with car in park and slightly reving. Sounds like a pulley but dealership says needs new transmission. Does this sound possible?

Anything is possible. Toyota is fighting with their V6 motor because it seems to be blowing up in their 22, 23, and 24 so a trans here and there is possible.
Seems like it should be under warranty and if the dealer says you need a new trans have them replace it or do what ever they need to do? |

It Could be the oil pump intermediate bearing. The bearing gets loose and the gear moves forward or backwards and starts to whine.

I had the same issue a while back, there is a thread in the transmissions section under A10 subtle whine with more info, I am copying what I wrote in my post with the outcome. Go check out the thread.
"So, I just picked the car up from the dealership yesterday after it being there for a month. They were able to reference a service bulletin #22-NA-232 which references the 10-speed oil pump drive gear. They ended up replacing the idler gear, damaged torque converter, transmission case front cover, input shaft support bolts, transmission fluid pump, and the transmission fluid filter. The car only hit 10k miles not long ago, and my service writer told me I was lucky to have it repaired now, could have cost GM a whole new transmission. This was all covered under warranty, but it would have been quite costly if it wasn't. So, my advice is if you hear a whine noise coming from your car, take it in and have them look up this bulletin." |

That would make sense. Explains why the whining can be heard at idle.
