Sanctioned Top speed runs

Has anyone did any top speed runs for speed/time? Specifically has anyone run for Loring Timing Association? I'm thinking of trying it this year since it is in my neighborhood. Bucket list type of event so I'm leaning real hard to going for it. Thanks

A few years ago I took my Grand Sport Corvette to the Kennedy space center space shuttle 3 mile runway. From a dead stop to the 2.7 mile trap I did 180 mph. Look up Johnny Bohmer Proving Grounds, I think he still does test runs there. It is not cheap, but the most fun a guy can ever have in his car. I'm not familiar with Loring.

That was cool!

Not to derail OP's thread but how does your 1le compare to your Grand Sport?

I looked into the Loring Timing Association a while back, but it looks like if you run over 135mph you'll need to weld a roll cage into the car. Their rules are understandably strict, but that's a big change that would have made it too much "race car" for my plans at the time so I never made the trip up.

I haven't tracked my Camaro or done a space center test, but comparing the 1LE to the Grand Sport in just spirited street driving, they are surprisingly close in handling the twistys. In straight line acceleration, again quite close but of course the edge goes to the Vette due to less weight.

For an old car, yes more work is listed, but the OP has a 2017 Camaro SS listed. That car can run in the Supercar class, which does not need to have a rollcage installed.

Yeah, their rules are either outdated or they don't actually want street vehicles to participate. Stock cars routinely trap at and past 140 mph even in a quarter mile these days, any top trim with 1000+ hp will do it, let alone have a top speed run past 135 mph... basically any decent modern car will easily do 150 mph and beyond.

Actually, Loring does have rules for newer cars, namely the Supercar class that I've already mentioned. OP will be fine at that track running a 2017 SS without installing a rollcage if he enters it in Supercar.

Wnta1ss, that's the class I'm thinking on running. Superclass, no need for extra cage as long as car is stock.

Check out The Texas Mile.

https://www.theusmileracing.com/

There used to be an open course somewhere in west Texas where they closed off a highway to allow top speed runs.

Edit: Here it is.

For general knowledge, besides the US tracks already mentioned, there is also the ECTA at Blytheville Arkansas. They also have classes for newer cars to run without installing a rollcage. Website is https://www.ectamile.com/

Interesting, I see that now. Either I missed something or this class is new as the last time I looked was like 5 years ago. Hmmm, I may have to bring the ZL1 up there once I get this tune a little more sorted out to see what it'll run...
