GM CAI Part#84877903 Inquiry

Potentially going to be looking for the GM CAI to finish off the look I'd like for under the hood.

Now this part seems all but impossible to find now, and I've read that the replacement is from Cold Air Inductions

What I am interested in is the tuning, or lack of tuning required for this unit.

The GM one came with a code for the dealer to flash, this one claims it needs no re flash.

What was in the updated tune that GM felt was necessary, but this company feels is the opposite.

Just curious! Not really looking for power gains, this is more of a visual upgrade for me, and anything else is a bonus.

Thanks!

The GM unit without the metal around the maf card needs a tune, the cai cai part with the metal next to the maf card does not. You can switch the cai part on the gm one with no tune.

If you have Hptuners you can do the tune for the gm unit yourself. There’s people here that have the maf curve file for it

Interesting.

What does the tune actually do in terms of feel/performance. Is it worth it even if I get the CAI?

Also thanks for the reply, that's very good info.

It corrects the fueling. Others Will argue but I’ve owned and ran it. when validating it against a wideband, the above is my recommendation if you want piece of mind that it’s running correctly.

If you don’t want to tune, buy both the cai cai and the gm cai. use the other lid with the plaque and blue filter. CAI won’t sell that part separately. I tried

The GM unit has a material to absorb hydrocarbons inside the metal tube to make it 50-state CARB compliant. That changes the airflow characteristics and the GM tune recalibrates the MAF data to account for it. The CAI unit doesn’t include the coating so it doesn’t need the tune and isn’t CARB compliant. I think GM discontinued their CAI years ago so even if you find one with a tune certificate there isn’t a GM tune available for the newer year models.

Well that's that then. Going to get the CAI CAI.
Which is weird to write out.
Thanks again for the info guys.
