As long as the part number is correct, an oil filter goes on only one way, so as long as it's torqued to specs, I don't see how it can be installed incorrectly. That said, most manufacturers suggest oil weight based on a couple of different things. Most will choose a lighter weight because it theoretically flows better and the lighter viscosity doesn't require as much force as pumping a much thicker oil would, thereby helping fuel economy (that must be a miniscule amount). Plus they try to choose a viscosity that does a good job at protecting the engine at varying temperatures and under the conditions that the majority of car owners use their car. If you track your car, then the load on the oil is more severe because of heat, extreme rpm's, and you naturally want an oil that clings better under extreme conditions. If you look at oils such as 0 w 40 compared to thicker viscosity oils, 0 w 40 looks about as viscous as water. Everyone has to do what they think is best. I don't track my ZL-1 and I plan on using the factory recommended 0 w 40. I have heard engines using viscosities that are much thicker than the recommended oil being started and many times you will hear a clattering sound due to the higher viscosity oil not flowing as readily, especially if the temperature drops unexpectedly. That clattering sound means parts are being run that may be being deprived of oil for a split second. Multiply that split second by every time you start your engine cold, and it could lead to increased wear over time. For me that's not worth the risk. That's why Chevrolet suggests using the thicker viscosity oil during track sessions when the engine is operating in extreme conditions and then switching back to the lighter viscosity for everyday use. |

But still, how could you install it incorrectly. Was it leaking, was it another part, was it to tight? Please give me the number of that service department, I want to call them. They have no way to prove that unless they show evidence. It sounds like here-say.

I buy the oil/filter and take the car to my local Grease Monkey and watch them do the work including going down into the pit to watch the filter change.

I have a pair of Quickjack 7000TL's in my garage. So it's easy for me to change the oil and filter!

My wife put up with a Pro Stock car on Projacks in our garage for years. Pretty sure if I put jacks under my ZL1 her divorce lawyer would contact me

Its really worth knowing that no dealer has certified mechanics doing oil changes, it's pimply kids and new guys, reason you hear some horror stories.

stick to the 0w40. It is recommended for the ZL1 for street and track.
Only the 1LE gets a w50 oil for extra security due the G forces. 0w40 on that one would probably run fine too. Also there is no 5w50 with dexos2 I believe. It also depends on track usage, ambient temp/oil temp. If you track at hot weather with 280°F Oil for longer time, I would rather take a 5w50. |
