There's a lot more to getting a time published at the ring than most know and it's not all GMs equipment and V&V to make that happen either. To just call Al and Bill liars is pretty damn weak IMO. We're only hearing one side here so take that with a grain of salt.

I am going to just come right out and say it.

There is no way Al O would have intentionally done this.

Everything I have seen and heard from the man tells me he is a straight shooter.

That's it! I'm buying a Smart car!

How about we just go by CD Lightning Lap?

It's not perfect, the ZL1 time listed was a wet lap and they said it easily could have done a few seconds better in the dry, but they do the same thing every time.

All I need to hear is its crew chief saying the 7:16 would have been 7:13 if the car hadn't had to leave from the pits. Also, the resources devoted to this ZL1 test pale to insignificance in comparison to those of many teams such as for the GTR's record a few years back. Nismo had a team of ten people camped out at the Ring for weeks testing before its hot laps. Don't you think Garage 56's guys could tune a ZL1 to crush 7:13?

Wink

I heard the 9 V battery that powered the timing Equipment was low, so the clock wasn’t keeping accurate time.

Really because you have to be a certified pro before you can drive like a pro? I'll wait for your answer here before I respond. Baiting the trap...

Then certainly you can't believe there was much more in this time. Have you looked at the cars running 7:16 or below? Physics say the 1LE isn't capable of competing with those cars. 7:16 is about as good as its going to get from a physics standpoint. There may be another tenth at the most in it with the most skilled driver on the planet. What most people don't realize about rhe Ring is that every tenth is a LOT of time. There's a night and day difference between a 7:16 car and a 7:10 car.

Hi all,

Yes sales boosts are what they are, no matter what manufacturer or product. The internet has guaranteed that so much data, some honest some not, will be out in the world before brochures can be printed. Look at how Dodge capitalized on their Demon TV commercials showing asses doing massive burnouts on city streets without regard to the negative image that displayed.

I personally don’t track my car, but I enjoy it for its extremely capable traits, even in street driving. Great brakes, ample horsepower and torque, fantastic handling and the best close ratio manual transmission I’ve ever had.

I’m curious how many ZLE owners on this forum, and elsewhere, actually bought their ZLE based on the times related in the Nurburgring video. The fact that there may or may not have been a slight timing error regarding that video would have held no consequence to me, based on the observed capabilities of the car with a skilled driver.

With no offense intended to anyone on this site, I seriously doubt there is even a handful of members here who are skilled enough drivers that could have matched the performance shown in the ZLE video.

I’m still very glad I have my car, and have no regrets on its purchase no matter the “correct time”.

JMO

I believe it was a mistake, and not a cover-up/lie. I also track my cars, and buy cars based on capabilities, track times and specs. To me, ‘Ring times do matter.

GM did not lie. Their times were audited and verified by Nurburgring before it was published. Keep in mind - the Nurburgring only changed their total timing table in the last few months.

GM spends $$$$$$ in getting their cars + drivers to the Ring. They went by the standard all lap times were judged back in 2017.

BTW - ZL1/1LE was sold with the very tires it did the lap times on. Meanwhile Porsche GT folks slaps on their cheater tires (Cup2R) for the Ring Lap times however are NOT sold on the car upon delivery. How about them apples?

Well said fellas.

The ZLE gets all this scrutiny because it's performance, to this day, is still very relevant.

Mustang still hasn't topped it, and the 2024 M4 CSL is just getting to the manual 1LE's 7:13 hand timed 20.6 lap.

And remember... "If people ain't hating on you, you don't matter."

The ZLE still matters.
