Exhaust cavitation?

Hi guys, I have a ‘23 1SS convert m6 and just noticed the ‘non’ round exhaust on both sides just before the muffler. Is this normal? Thanks.

Ah yes, the "crush pipe" on our Camaros. Its to make enough clearance for the extra bracing needed on convertible models. Tons of testing has been done and its not restrictive on your exhaust at all. Completely normal.

Crazy how it doesn't restrict HP, are we sure??

Yes, type "crush pipe" in the search bar and you'll see its been tested countless times over the years. It has no negative effect on power.

Ok, thanks guys…gives me a little peace of mind. I’m just so used to seeing no anomalies like that in an exhaust system.

Everyone has the same intuition about this, hence the amount of testing it got. Sure, it looks butt ugly, but surprisingly enough, the crushed pipe section isn't a restriction until one's into bonkers crazy 4-digit horsepower numbers (one, it isn't bashed in completely and two, it's located very far from the engine).

Don't give this any more thought, just enjoy the car

Yep, I know it doesn't hurt performance at all, but I still had to get the crush delete pipes.
AND I don't believe the explanation about needing clearance for the verts.
You can see on Itethal's vert that the exhaust returns to full round before the next obstacle. IMHO, I think Chevy is actually using that section of the exhaust as a resonator. And sometimes I think it sounded better... crushed.

This could be the reason...
I think it was pagani when he added turbos to his zonda or whatever model was, the sound took a hit and he send the exhaust to a engineering company and they crushed and expanded the pipes with an hydraulic machine in specific areas to make the engine sound good again.

Strange to think…there’s plenty of room for a normal pipe without it being the ‘crushed pipe’. It doesn’t seem necessary, then again I’m no engineer.

On a recent episode of Roadkill Garage, F & D were putting a power steering gearbox in the big block crusher Impala and had to pound some dents into one of the header tubes. Freiburger mentioned they did dyno testing on doing this on Engine Masters and found no real difference in power unless the denting was pretty severe.
