Electronic parking brakes
Having driven stick my whole life I'm thinking about the electronic parking brake and just wondering, well, why?
I totally get automatic parking brake releases with an automatic transmission, Cadillac has had them since the '50s using vacuum and then when when you take the transmission out of park it pops the lock gear of the parking brake pedal. But electronic parking brakes? On a manual transmission? I am a bit perplexed here.

Everything is perplexing these days, never thought about being perplexed about the electronic parking brake until now. Sure wouldn't mind a manual puller with my manual shifter, but you get used to it. Congrats on the '24 coming in soon.

I'm guessing it was a space issue with the good ole Tremec. Definitely would have preferred an "analog" parking brake.

Nah, most new cars have this feature today. My Toyota Camry has it too. It's just easier and cheaper from an engineering and parts perspective to keep everything standardized.

Even more perplexing to me is getting an a10 in a LT1 or LT4. The whole reason I ordered my car is so I can rip through the gears manually like when I was a teenager and paddle shifters do not count. Like, I'm not calling anyone out for it bc to each's own, but please explain. Is it track related? |

I personally think they are easier to work on, no more adjusting cables or taking cables off when you change calipers. I like em.

As I'm sure most of you who've driven stick as long (or longer) as I have, you understand where I'm coming from - the fact I can literally move a car without having to start it or even have the keys with me it a total bonus with stick shifts. If you want to just push it a couple feet to get your yard equipment out of the garage, or get around it if it's in the way, you can do it quickly and easily even if your keys are in the house.
And as I see it, this pretty much ends all possibility of clutch popping a dead battery unless you park it in gear without the brake on.

Gen6 camaros have two different types of parking brakes. The "cable pull" type where pulling on the button causes a motor to tighten cables attached to mini-drum brakes in the rear wheel rotors. the other is the screw/piston type which uses a motor integrated in the rear caliper to drive the piston so the pads clamp the rear rotor. I don't think brembros support the screw/piston technology. On my 2SS I can hear the cable pull motor every time i park. |

I'd absolutely prefer a normal hand brake as well, but it's not surprising they did it this way. Look what Dodge does, using an old school pedal release. I guess the hill hold function makes it less of a necessity as well.

To me the best reason for the electronic parking brake is it allows for the manual transmission hill hold feature which is very convenient and works very well.
It is really needed these days where almost every has an automatic and most seem to have no idea that they don't need to creep up to inches from your rear bumper on an uphill to a traffic light.

I don't get along with the hill hold, makes it harder for me. I deleted it long ago but it came back.

- Bad back, bad knee, hip, foot, sciatica. Mild sciatica and intermittent left leg weakness for me. - Shitty traffic. I’m in the suburbs 20 miles outside of Boston, traffic can very easily ruin what should be fun day of driving (more than not). Now, I just relax. -The A10 in my LT1 is super responsive. The paddles, in my opinion, are for the most part useless in the A10. Too many gears and sport auto mode is just that good. If the tranny wasn’t as good as it is, I would have passed and gone the Audi or BMW route. I still may buy a used beater M6, after everything turns to crap economy wise (if it happens). Depends on pricing, a second fun car that could be driven even less than the existing A10 keeper, would have to be a great deal. |
