Rock chips on rear diffuser/valance?

I just picked up my new ZL1 on Saturday, drove it home ~200 miles and it’s been parked since. I washed it yesterday and it seems as though rocks are really attracted to this car. I’d expect here and there for the rock and sides..but on the rear?? There are a few chips around the exhaust outlets and a pretty nasty scratch on the bottom of the passenger side rear valance. I’ve owned many vehicles, but I’ve never seen this. 🤔😡

Reach out to the dealer to discuss it with them. See if they've run into it and whether it could get covered as something that occurred during the transport process. That almost sounds like the car was loaded on the truck backwards?

Thanks. That’s almost what I was thinking as well. I don’t know how else you’d have rock chips on the rear.

That's what I'm thinking, too. But... Is it possible to load a ZL1 backwards on the trailer or would the splitter drag as you're backing it on? I have no guess...

I also had that thought. I know it is common to have vehicles loaded backwards... but my sports cars it seems quite rare.

My only other thought was that it is front actually driving the car (?). I still find it very far fetched that rocks made it up into there and basically shot off of the top of the exhaust tip. Then throw in that this happened a handful of times?? Idk... maybe I'm wrong but that seems crazy on a car that has seen ~200 miles.

I'd definitely call the dealership and even open a case with Chevy about it. If you're going to press the dealership to help, keep it framed that way - "I need your help..."

How do you open a case with Chevy...isn't that through the dealership?

The other part that sucks is that my selling dealer is over 3 hours away. I believe for the majority of issues like this, you have to go through the selling dealership.

My passenger door also has a slight fold in the alcantara that I had already complained about... now this. The fold I was honestly probably going to forget about as it really isn't that bad. I also don't want to rip my brand new door apart. (I had already told them that I would be taking the part home and doing the work myself. My car is NOT going into a shop, especially for something like that. I know for that, they have to plug the OBD in to get the case started and then they have to submit the damaged part back to GM.

I know CDJR dealers have to do this as well, because my friend had to have his Hellcat bumper repaired from transport damage. We had wanted to keep the bumper as a garage wall trophy LOL but it had to be sent back to Dodge..

Call them at 1-800-462-8782

Open a case about damage to the diffuser. I wouldn't provide them any photos or lengthy description, just that the paint on the diffuser has rock chips in it and you're in need of assistance to get it corrected.

Call the dealership and talk with them. Be transparent and tell them you opened a case with Chevy too in an effort to make it a little simpler overall. Tell GM directly that the dealership is not near you and you were wondering if there WAS a dealership in the area that you could work with where they have a body shop.

It's a big song and dance that you have to do... I was able to get help in a similar fashion because there were two rock chips at the bottom of the front bumper on my car when I took delivery. I trailered it home and found them when I got there, and the selling dealership were completely uninterested in helping me unless I drove the car 2.5 hours back to them (and likely incur more damage). Lots of discussions with a local dealer that I liked and they helped to get the regional rep for GM involved to get me to a dealership with a body shop.

I only ever interacted with the Service / body shop manager and ultimately they were able to help me get some items corrected (including a defective windshield and some paint rubs). The whole thing is about feigning a bit of helplessness and being at their mercy...

Can you feel the scratch with your finger nail? If not they should be able to buff out from a reputable detailer who can do paint protection. Other then that expect the dealership to blame the 200 mile drive home.

160 mile drive home with mine but fully inspected the car before leaving and wrapped every nook and cranny with painters tape where the Camaros known for picking up rocks before getting the PPF put on.

Guessing someone floored it on the dirt parking lot in Lansing. Have an SS2 and needed to remove the rear plastic valance during its first detail since a ton small pebbles were caught between the black plastic and paint.

Yes, these are chips and an actual scratch. I'm into detailing as sort of a hobby, so I know what is fixable versus having to repaint, etc... I have a buffer and all of that in my garage at home lol.

Their answer so far was to send a touchup tube or they can do it there. I'm leaning towards replacing the part if I can. It is all on the valance and it shouldn't be that difficult to swap. The part itself is only a few hundred bucks... whether it comes paint or NOT is the main concern. It doesn't specify anywhere that I've seen.

See if you can get GM to help get it covered. My guess is that it ISN'T painted in which case having your current one repainted would likely be the most cost-effective way to handle the situation.

Are you sure they are rock chips? Looks more like something scraped against it. Like someone being careless during the build process, or carless during transport.

There do seem to be some scrapes, but looks like a few chips as well. Could there by damage from chains or similar? That could be the issue as well.

GM -HAS- the ability to assist through the Goodwill program, but it comes down to whether or not you can tug on the right person's heartstrings to get them to want to do it...
